This will probably be the final time I draw Opulence before he gets retired, so I figure now's the time to write a long rambling post about him. I've had this character since I first joined PPAU in 2018- that's six years ago! Damn! A little less, technically, since I joined in September and it's April now. He means a whole whole whole lot to me, his personality was based off my own at the time and he changed with me, even if we grew in different directions.
For a long time he was my number one favorite character- his design is a combination of simple to draw and pleasant to look at that I still haven't managed to top with any of my other PPAU dragons. I mean just look at Cass in comparison, she's an over-complicated nightmare. Having the two of them side by side like this makes me want to redesign her, honestly.
Anyway! As much as I love and adore Opu, over time I've used him less and less. His character arc is over, the players who own his closest friends and family are less active than they used to be, and SIX. YEARS. Is a looong time to focus on a single guy, no matter how near and dear he is to my heart. For the past year all he's really been doing is taking up a slot in the Emerald talon.
I know people will be sad to see him go but he's practically been an NPC for a while, and I'm actually really excited to finally make it official! He deserves a quiet, successful career and an unproblematic family life. I hope, like me, you can look at his retirement not as something to mourn, but instead as something to celebrate.
