Description
Today is the anniversary of the arrival of the first missionaries in Alaska. Thanks to the Orthodox missionaries in Alaska, the native Alaskan tribes were treated with respect and dignity, and even considered full citizens in the Russian empire. Their compassion and good example led the Alaskan peoples to say, "we see now that we have always been Orthodox, it only took Jesus sending someone to show us how to live it out."Within the first generation of Alaskan converts, missionary zeal sized the Alaskan people, and St. Peter the Aleut boldly went to proclaim the love of Jesus in California, where he met with western Christians for the first time, and they gave him the gift of martyrdom.
Alaska has produced many saints and has been a jewel of Orthodox Christianity. The first Orthodox Church in the new world, the mother of all American Orthodoxy!
And just as St. Paul continually exorted the Apostolic churches to remember the poor in Jerusalem because we gentiles could look to Jerusalem as our mother church, so too, let us remember those in Alaska today, those wonderful Christian people who are the first fruits of Orthodoxy in the new world, and who have been persecuted for their faith and for their language ever since America purchased Alaska and began a genocidal campaign against the Native tribes and culture. Let us unite with our brothers in the North and defend those who cannot defend themselves.
