Description My recent discussions with regarding biblical counseling have made me see some of the common objections to an Orthodox approach to soul care, so I want to clarify something.

All Christians, Orthodox, protestant, Catholic, etc, all Christians who practice counseling have some common ground. First, we all recognize that secular psychology gets some things right. Second, we all generally recognize that secular psychology gets a lot wrong. Right here, the objections i usually see towards biblical counseling, "you're a science denier" or "you're rejecting counseling knowledge" are baseless.

The real difference is whether or not we believe that secular methods and or philosophy are necessary to fully counsel people. On this, the truly Orthodox approach to soul care, or biblical counseling, says no.

I believe that protestant biblical counseling has been extremely beneficial and I see so many people who have been helped by protestant counselors. I love my brothers and sisters in the ACBC, and I love my CCEF counselors who are protestant (note that CCEF does actually have Orthodox Counselors unlike ACBC), and they have done a wonderful job of showing that the Sacred Scriptures address every counseling topic better than any secular method ever can and ever will. However, I would like to humbly go a step further.

If you're Eastern Orthodox, you belong to the Church to whom Christ gave "all knowledge" the Church which Jesus Hinself established and which the Holy Spirit has come upon. You possess the fullness of the faith once for all delivered to the saints. We have so much more to offer than even our faithful and beloved protestant brethren do when it comes to biblical counseling. And we have had it all along. We didn't need secular philosophy or secular methods to come along and show us a higher way, and we never will, we have the fullness of God's Revelation in Christ. And we have everything we need to care for the whole person, for both their spiritual AND mental health. So, we don't need "integrationism" precisely because we have all that we need to counsel people, and then some.
