After church and brunch Sheryle and I went to see The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It was bloody brilliant (no pun intended).

If you've read Stoker, then you already know this is a Dracula movie, and as a Dracula movie it may actually be my favorite ever made. It combines the beautifully terrifying aesthetic of Nosferatu with a genuinely atmospheric horror that puts the goofy, overacted, and comedic vampire movies you're probably used to to shame.

Was it perfect? Probably not, but it was very good. The horror aspect was superb, I appreciated that it was atmospheric and employed a mix of body horror and gut wrenching tragedy to create genuine fear rather than cheap jump scares and gore that many American horror movies rely on. This movie understands that the things we fear most are the things that make us sad, tragedies that rip our hearts out. Because what makes us cry and ask, "why O Lord" is more frightening than anything that could be done to us directly.

By the way, friendly reminder that Bram Stoker was an Irishman and a Christian. And that Dracula is actually based on a real count from Romania who was frightening but also really interesting (about whom Bram Stoker knew next to nothing).

Warning, this movie is not one you should watch if you can't handle the worst tragedies imaginable, but if you can handle horror in its most raw form, this movie is for you. If you're expecting a vampire movie that makes you laugh this is not the movie for you. But if you're like me and you hate movies that treat vampires like something goofy and kid friendly then you're in for a treat. I highly recommend.
