Description
An interesting question people sometimes ask is, "Why did God create people in the first place?" We know that the world is fallen now but according to Christianity, that wasn't always the case, so, what was our "job" so to speak, before the fall? Well, the short answer, we were made to be icons! The slightly longer but still social media length answer is that we are icons in two primary ways, as kings and priests.
1. As kings, we show God by ruling under Him.
In this part of our task, we enter upon a world full of chaos and we bring order into it. When we do our job well, we create social and societal structures that are mutually beneficial for the whole planet.
A good example of this that most people are readily familiar with is pets. Dogs, cats, horses, birds and the like. Without them, we can't build a society, but without us, their lives are brutal, difficult, and chaotic. So, the relationship is mutually beneficial.
Now, unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world, and sin definitely muddies that design, but pets are a glimpse of the synergistic rulership we are supposed to exercise over creation.
And 2. We are God's priests. This is difficult for most protestant groups to understand because they don't have priests. But in the ancient world, priests were like a living icon of your God, the go between. They represent you to God and God to you.
Our role as God's priests is that we are called to reflect other people and creatures to God (in prayer) and God to other people and creatures (in loving service).
