Connections:
- Protagonists recognizable for wearing mostly black clothing, have a knack for computers, and use unique machinery that allows them to enter and interact with the virtual worlds they live and fight in as an avatar of their image (the Headjack allowed Neo to connect to the Matrix, while Kirito uses various FullDive consoles to enter VRMMO worlds).
- Both have been thrust into their heroic situations through dire circumstances (Neo was rescued by Morpheus and told the truth about the Matrix, while Kirito got trapped in Sword Art Online), which would cause them to die in the real world if they were to die in the virtual world, and would force them to work together with a female individual who they would eventually form a romantic relationship with (Trinity and Asuna, respectively).
- Both would ultimately succeed in freeing their worlds from the antagonists who acted as a threat to their whole cyberspace worlds (Agent Smith and Heathcliff, respectively) despite dying in the process, though both managed to cheat death in some form and be brought back to life at a later time.
