Description This piece was done for a gallery show in a local comic/toy shop called "Unreal City". The theme was "urban animals" but that was interpreted and stretched into many different and amusing directions by the artists! The show opening was a lot of fun and the pieces will be up until late July so if you're in the Saskatoon area, check it out! Thanks to Theo for supplying the space and to Dave Geary for curating.

At least two other deviants are also in the show: [link] and [link] (If there are others, please remind me!)

Drawn with a Raphael 8408, #3 brush and Hunt Speedball Super Black ink on Bristol board. Some marker used for the (bad) hand lettering. Coloured in Photoshop with a Wacom tablet. Thanks for looking!

we don't have raccoons in Australia - but this is hilarious - I guess they are a bit like a possum

We actually don't have that many of them around here either (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). They are mostly a problem further East in Canada but I used some artistic license. They are quite large and intelligent and essentially have hands so they can open doors, etc. and become real hazards. Thanks for the fave!

Haha! We had an interesting family of racoons living at the resort hotel I worked at in Colorado. They provided a lot of late-night entertainment. We played "death star compactor" when they would climb into the hotel's trash-compactor.

Never did any such thing. Not that it wasn't tempting. They carried out raids on our dorm kitchen. Lol, one of my friends was constantly blamed for eating other peoples' food...regardless of the flour racoon prints all over the countertops.

I didn't think you were the raccoon grinding type. (That's a type?!) We actually don't have that much problem with them around here but I know they cause a lot of havoc down east in Toronto, etc. Smart scavenger with hands are a problem! They also carry some awful diseases so I would stay well away from the critters.

This is wonderful. I should print and post this around my neighbourhood, because it certainly applies. Mind you, the deer are actually more destructive and ravenous.

Huwman In reply to ElectricGecko [2013-05-28 03:05:33 +0000 UTC]

Raccoons aren't really that much of a problem out here on the prairie so I may have exaggerated just a tiny bit. I have heard they can be a real challenge out in your neck of the woods though. Deer do far, far more damage here too. Thanks for the fave and comment!

ElectricGecko In reply to Huwman [2013-05-28 11:44:39 +0000 UTC]

Raccoons are more insidious. I remember a guy I knew at university who almost had a heart attack when he was throwing out a coffee cup in the garbage on campus and a little pair of hands came out of the swinging door and grabbed it from him. A huge raccoon had figured out a solution to having the food come to him.

We have lots of raccoons around our little semi-rural subdivision. Big, fat bastiches, eating so well off our garbage that they're huge and waddling.Β

Deer = rats with hooves.Β

I see at least two or three deer killed on the road every year. And they destroyed my neighbor's hedge.Β

Did you ever see that episode of "Masters of Horror" directed by Dario Argento called "Pelts"? It's based on a short story by F. Paul Wilson. I think that it's the best film that Dario Argento has ever done and maybe the best story that F. Paul Wilson has ever written. It's basically has to do these fur trappers (played by John Saxon and Meat Loaf) who kill these racoons who worship a witch in a forest and their fur turns out to be haunted. It's my most favourite episode of "Masters of Horrors". It's from the second season.

I haven't seen that although I remember hearing about it because of the unusual title. I really want to see it now! I have seen Meat Loaf live but no raccoons were involved. I just received "Spider Baby" and "Freaks" DVDs in the mail today so I'm pretty excited about watching those again!

WeirdWonders In reply to Huwman [2013-05-28 12:35:18 +0000 UTC]

I've been wanting to see "Spider Baby" for a long time. However, I've forgotten what it's about. It's no longer available Zip.ca. I've seen "Freaks" several times. It was actually on TCM a couple weeks ago. I used to have it on VHS. I love the part of the movie when the freaks get together to get the band guy on a dark and stormy evening. Lots of eerie looking framing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Huwman In reply to WeirdWonders [2013-05-28 17:44:00 +0000 UTC]

Yep. That ending of Freaks was a bit too much for people at the time, I guess, since the thing was banned in some places for many decades. We watched it last night and it's very cool. Spider Baby is about that family that has the "disorder" where they essentially become flesh-eating monsters. This DVD I got is apparently a final director's cut using some "lost" footage (which they found, of course) so I'm looking forward to seeing it again. I hope I'll have time tonight.
