Description

When it comes to Epsilon, or sometimes simply just E, very few people find themselves on the fence. The people of Earth either love her or hate her. But there’s no arguing the fact that since she’s appeared (seemingly out of nowhere) eight years ago, she’s has saved countless lives. At least for now.

First recorded rescuing a Bolivian jetliner from plunging into the South Atlantic, she helped it coast to a gentle stop nearly two hundred miles back along a sandy strip of coastline. After that, there was the meteor she smashed over Novosibirsk, the mortar battle she stopped in the Gaza Strip, & the Terrormech Invasion she squelched in Madrid. Able to act singlehandedly in such highly publicized incidents, it didn’t take long for her to establish a position among the top tier of superheroes operating globally, becoming something of a celebrity along the way. Albeit a fairly enigmatic one.

Despite various high profile, one-on-one interviews she’s done with several large international media outlets, her demeanor remains icy & aloof. Not that she explicitly avoids the questions, more than the person conducting the interview always seems a little too intimidated to ever get around to ask the actual questions. To this day, no one even knows where she comes from. General consensus seems to assume some kind of extraterrestrial origin, given the fact that she’s 6’6 & pink, with glowing eyes that cycle between violet & orange tints.

Even the full rage of her powers are debated. Sure, the “classics” (i.e. flight, along with superhuman strength, speed, & durability) have been observed, but the extent of her power remains unknown, though she’s hoisted jetliners just fine & has been known to break the sound barrier midflight. She’s displayed some level of shapeshifting, but only for very limited periods. Some speculate she may also be a low level telepath, able to read thoughts & communicate ideas, possibly even able to bend some people’s will. Conspiracists claim it would explain the lack of hard hitting questions ever being posed to her.

One of the few things that is common knowledge is the way Epsilon exploits the perks of her celebrity status. Like her entourage of 10-20 “assistants” that follow her with something of a cult-like devotion. Or how every few months, she’s wearing an entirely new uniform, each made by a different top designer in the fashion industry. Or how she collects gifts from certain cities, hoping to get her closer vigilance in exchange, including her own high rise in Dubai, the fourth tallest structure in the world. Her detractors will call each of these out, often until they’re blue in the face.

What they don’t know is the truth.

The fact of the matter is that Epsilon, or Lady Epsilonnia Tau-Thetan VI, isn’t only from a distant star several hundred million light years away, but the third-in-line heiress to a vast corporate empire spanning six galaxies. She would (if she could) be the first to tell you that a measly planet like Earth is the last place for someone of both her literal & figurative power. But after a recklessly indulgent night of partying not only collapsed three separate galaxy’s financial markets, but destroyed an entire system by sending a red giant supernova, Epsilonnia was placed under arrest.

After being charged with several capitol offenses, her family’s grand corporate legal types were able to reduce the heiress’ punishment to what would be akin to community service: 3 Tau Cycles of service & protection provided to an fledgling world. The legal types wrangled to have it be one far removed from the Corporate Core of the Greater Intergalactic Empire, hoping to keep the watchful eye of their own media away. And so Earth was eventually settled upon, seeing as it resided in a portion of secluded space that would take the fastest civilian means of transport almost the entire duration of Epsilon’s sentence to reach.

After being imprinted with a quantum surveillance construct, the heiress was teleported across the known universe to start serving out her sentence. The construct was designed to monitor Epsilonnia & not only prevent her from leaving a certain gravitational range of the designated world, but curb antisocial behavior & keep her from revealing the existence of the Greater Intergalactic Empire to the general populace of the planet before its full development (which even includes mention of her sentencing, as it was a result of the Empire).

Now, in the homestretch of her service term, Epsilonnia is counting the days until the construct runs its course. On that day, at the very minute, she expects some delegation from the corporation to be there to get her back home. If not, there’s going to be hell to pay, & the enraged heiress will have no one to take it out on but the people of Earth.

It’s weird. I have very little want or desire to actually do anything superhero related that at this point. I mean thirteen year old me? Sure, no problem. Now? Ech. But I think just through conditioning back then & the books I read growing up, I still get ideas for things from time to time. This one came from me thinking about how the whole Superman/benevolent alien ubermensch thing is such wishful thinking. How it’s kind of weak that it’s pretty much only a Midwestern upbringing that kind of keeps the Earth of the DCU from being under Kal-El’s rule, you know? From there, I sort of toyed with the premise “so why then?” & thought it’s a weird semi-entitled position for citizens to just assume all superheroes do what they do out of the kindness of their hearts. And that’s when I figured the community service thing was as good a reason as any. I played with the idea of her being the daughter of some kind of evil warlord or something, but in the end, it seemed like making her inherently evil made her some how less evil, if that makes sense, & thus kept the sociopath heiress angle instead.

I found one of my terrible weaknesses in doing these characters. This is the second time I wanted to try a haute couture kind of thing with a character’s look & failed. I wanted to really play up designers going wild with superhero costumes for this amazonian alien lady each season, but when it got to designing & trying to think of something, nothing was original or functional enough until I just kind of settled for what felt like a sharp, but relatively generic superhero thing anyway. On the whole, I like this look for a superbeing type, it just wasn’t what I was hoping for. Originally, I wanted to give her either a dark navy blue or deeply saturated magenta skin tone but neither seemed to suit her. Then I when I went with darker than it was now but with lightly (at the time glowing) hair. With the black, grey & gold it was way too close to Storm. So then I tweaked it again & started upping the saturation. Problem was as I went further & further, I started thinking it was getting too close to Starfire territory. But I think pink with iridescent orange/purple hair’s distinct enough.

Well, that’s one month down. Eleven more to go. I feel like these back stories keep getting longer & longer. I don’t know if it’s a good thing. Probably isn’t. Moving forward, I’ll try to be more concise I guess. It’s just hard as I have the ideas for the character & don’t know if I’ll ever end up exploring them again, you know?

cool story, loved the whole community service spin in the end, and i agree with you, assuming every superhero has reached such self-betterment to the point they do stuff out of the goodness of their heart is but wishfull thinking XD
