Description
GENERAL OVERVIEWThe Basilisk is a fearsome monster whose name has been etched in the legends of wargs from the time of Fenrir and Jord. Said to have been created by an unholy union of ill-intent magic, snakes and eagles; the basilisk is vicious and deadly. Basilisks are solitary creatures that are known to lay gold-speckled eggs which are highly valuable and create incredible potions. To steal a basilisk egg is to court death in more ways than one and a basilisk will hunt down those who do steal from it.
BEHAVIOR and APPEARANCEAn ambush hunter, the basilisk can stay as still as stone as they wait for their quarry to pass by. When within striking distance, the basilisk lashes out and quickly coils around their intended prey using a combination of constriction and sharp pointed teeth to kill. If a basilisk is surprised, as a defensive mechanism when they look an attacker directly in the eye, their attacker will turn to stone. The nests of basilisks are often surrounded by those fools who thought they might steal an egg or two.
With a combination of features similar to a snake and an eagle, the monster has something akin to a bird's beak with reptilian features. Small, snake-like eyes sit on either side of its head and tufts of feathers extend from the back of its head along the spine to a pair of large, feathered wings. While the wings are less used for flight, and more for quick and easy ascension of trees and steep rocky inclines, they are nevertheless an intimidating sight. The rest of the spine down to the tip of the tail is featherless and instead is covered in thick, pointed scales, hard and difficult to penetrate.
A basilisk hunts by scent - detected by a long, forked tongue, and are able to sense slight tremors in the earth when a quarry moves quickly and loudly. A basilisk can grow up to 49.2ft/15m long, and is able to ‘stand up’ and lift over a third of its body into the air when threatened. They come in a multitude of different colors, from grays to blues to greens and pale white, dependent on the area they have come from and whatever colors make it easiest for them to camouflage.
The warg depicted is representative of the max height for the race.
