In the decade(s) after Film FTL was developed, drives were hugely expensive and difficult to make. Most ships were not equipped with drives unless they were important enough to warrant one. Large FTL carriers were constructed to ferry around most other ships and led to the implementation of standardized clamps and ports. Incase of power issues that occasionally plagued early carriers, they favored having mechanical hard locks over magnetic systems. Although an attachment was developed to make any clamp system a magnetic system.

Even after the carries became obsolete, their arms and ports persisted on all modern ships and stations.
