The animation is amazing, but I think the ordering of the legs touching the ground might be wrong. I thought quadrupeds went "back-front", not "front-back".

0.o What?!! You're right. I was being *so* careful to get the walking cycle correct... how did I mess that up? Ah well, it's an easy fix for future animations when I reuse the walking cycle. Thanks for pointing it out!

d'oh! I forgot to animate a blink! I even kept reminding myself to do it, lol. I didn't do one for Spike, either.

Excellent! And great work with the lighting. You know, this makes me think, we really need an episode flashing back to Twilight and Spike's time together growing up in Canterlot. I'd like to see that.

This is so unique!
Almost everything is smooth as heck too. The only part that could use work is her head turn. Looks stiff only because she turns at a ~constant speed, but it's impressive nonetheless.
Another small thing I'd add is a glance upward before she grabs the book. (man this makes me want to animate too)

HydrusBeta In reply to tealshift [2014-05-23 08:40:12 +0000 UTC]

I think you're right about the head turn - I do have it turning at a constant rate, and the motion could probably be made more organic by tweaking the speed. That turning motion (and Spike's too) took me *forever* to finish, though, so I think I'll experiment with another way to model a turn. In the show, I believe they just switch between 3 views - profile, 3-quarters, and front view - with a little bit of tweening, rather than smoothly tweening the motion of EVERY FRIGGIN FACIAL FEATURE like I did, here. ^_^

Very nicely done. You rarely see animations with Twilight in her pure unicorn state anymore.

Thanks! I think you can, so long as you have sufficient drive and enough patience (*lots* of patience) and focus to do so. I hadn't even started drawing until just over a year and a half ago.

HydrusBeta In reply to J-Yoshi64 [2014-05-27 03:31:25 +0000 UTC]

Ah yea, I'm currently using Adobe CS6 which cost a fair bit of money and has a steep learning curve. There are open-source animation software packages, though, if you're interested. Synfig is the program I used to make my very first animation. Also, Flash has a trial version you could try out.

HydrusBeta In reply to Envirotech [2014-05-20 18:52:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The hallway was, surprisingly, relatively quick to animate and I think it turned out really well. Twilight's walk cycle is exactly 1 second long (24 frames), so making the background cycle exactly 16 seconds long made for a seamless loop.

8D Beautiful work! Very well done, the animation is very smooth and has great perspectives on the library as a whole. Those bookcases, gosh! Twi's horn magic has a great little loop, her gait is excellent, and the her shading is really good. I love her interaction with Spike. His arm movement looks a little odd, but other than that this whole thing is gorgeous. Really amazing stuff!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

HydrusBeta In reply to mechafone [2014-05-20 18:43:02 +0000 UTC]

I had a lot of fun doing that background with all the bookcases. Originally, the hallway was going to be a lot smaller, but I'm glad I went with something more grandiose.

I was hoping the character interaction would make the animation more interesting; glad you like it!

Spike's arm in the walking cycle is a bit strange, and I was never really satisfied with it. I re-worked it a couple of times and just decided to move on. If I end up re-using his walk cycle somewhere, maybe I'll try to improve it.

Thanks so much!

Oh no! Ā Ā Ā  lol.

There was a time when I was considering adding a little easter egg; After 10 loops or so, Spike was going to be "late" showing up to take the book from Twilight, and Twilight would absent-mindedly drop the book on the floor, instead. I decided not to, though, since it would be a lot of extra work and very few people would notice it.

Really love the lighting work, and the sense of scale and perspective when they pass the hall.

HydrusBeta In reply to ColonelYeo [2014-05-19 07:46:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! all that shading adds a significant amount of work to the animation, but I think it's worth it. I thought the hallway turned out really well, and I was surprised that it took relatively little time to make (~a few days).

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

HydrusBeta In reply to Bubble-Deer [2014-05-19 07:39:24 +0000 UTC]

I honestly just didn't think about wings when I started work on the animation. By the time I noticed I didn't put wings, I decided to just proceed with pre-alicorn Twi; I was worried that the small changes in body proportions would end up requiring a lot of re-animating.
