Description

Continuing my personal project to give fictional characters "realistic" Pokemon teams and post them here. What does "realistic" mean?

- No Legendaries or Mythicals!
- Most Pokemon on a team should be common or “only a little rare” (according to the lore in the games, manga or anime).
- At least 2 slots must be weaker or unevolved Pokemon.

For Merida, thinking about her movie gave me some pretty strong themes to try and follow. The strongest ones I used in the end were; Celtic Myths & History, Forest Spirits, Forest Archers & Bears. The team I came up with for her is really strong against Fighting and Ghost types, which considering the story of her movie, is pretty fitting and cool. Or at least I think so.

    ·         Teddiursa is obviously here to represent her little brothers in the film, and plus it’s an adorable little bear! How would she not love it!?

    ·         Noctowl, along with Teddiursa, gives us our "2 weaker 'Mons" requirement. A common nocturnal bird that hunts silently in forests at night... sounds like the perfect partner for an Archer who adventures in spooky woods!

    ·         Trevenant & (Shiny) Rapidash are here to represent the forest spirits in the movie. A ghostly tree AND blue flames? Together they work perfectly, and bring a balance of 3 typings to the team (Grass, Ghost & Fire, obviously).

    ·         Perrserker is a Viking, not a Gaelic warrior, but the team needed a Steel type to resist Flying and Rock, and it’s a Galarian Pokemon, so it works well enough.

    ·         Pangoro the Ace! Her 2nd bear Pokemon, this one big and scary instead of small and cute. Pangoro’s Dark typing helps round out her team and anchors it as her "Powerhouse" pokemon. The hero/protector elements in it’s design also help reference back to the movie again though Merida's mother... It’s literally both Mor’du AND Elinor, which is just too perfect!

Making Merida's team balanced AND thematic was a lot of fun! The obvious elephant in the room is a lack of Decidueye, and while I agree wholeheartedly that the Archer-Bird would be the perfect Pokemon to represent Merida herself, I really wanted to use Trevenant who shares Decidueye's exact typings! Thinking about the kind of area Merida would adventure in in a Pokemon filled world (i.e. a spooky, spiritual forest), I think it makes a lot of sense that she would catch 'Mons like Noctowl & Trevenant, and that idea helped bring the rest of the team together as a whole.

Next up: Mulan (Disney)
