Description for those of you that may want a peek at the process to that XO cover ...here it is. from left to right....
1) thumbnail- this was one of a dozen ideas I submitted to Valiant. normally I wouldn't recommend doing more than four for a client. but, this was an unusual situation in that they had very specific parameter for what their cover should entail. such as no down shots, no upshots, etc. so it took awhile for me to nail something down.
2) line art. once they picked a concept they liked, I then drew it up. this is where things get real. Ideas that you may have had...or at least could picture in your head changes when the pen hits paper ( so to speak). you either can't draw what you see in your head, or have a better idea of how that idea should look. I let things play out organically at this stage...and usually, like in this instance, I'll get something better than I planned to. I throw a little color on there so the editor can tell what he or she is looking at and wait for approval.
3) shadows. once I get the all clear on where my art is at this point, I do a shadow guide. I'm very particular on how I want my art lit...so I provide the guide to the colorist to follow. it can make their job easier and I can be that much sure...er(?) that I'll get what I like back although in this instance , I don't think Kat would've needed my help lol!

check out the final art with color here...
