Description
if you consider letters, ideograms, and logograms, all of these forms of writing are essentially symbols that communicate ideas and concept. while there is an argument to be made about the extent to which visuals arts can be language, art pieces composed of symbols, or broken up into symbolic elements might have a place in what we call language.the main issue when considering these symbols in art as language, is what ideas and concepts do they represent. these concepts do not need to be fixed or static, with specific meaning. afterall, words themselves can have their meaning change over time. but their meaning should revolve around a core idea, which informs an initial approach to understanding it, and the knowledge to be gained from it.
a possible use of such symbols is to suggest a theme of ideas it represents, and to allow others to consider those ideas together in that context. a way of framing the relationship between two concepts, could be the same as how one would use a mantra to better reflect and understand the meaning of a word and the ideas it is used to express.
in this instance, with this symbol, I would like to reflect on the meaning of "symbol" and "language", and how they relate to concepts such as "awareness of the external" and "awareness of the internal". the process of rationalization through language, and our relationship with reality through language.
can a single symbol truly express this specific idea and relationship between concepts. is there is use in doing so?
