This was one of the very first times USA saw fighting in the Great War.
Though unconfirmed, it has been widely accepted the U.S. Marine Corps’ nickname, the "Devil Dogs" ("Teufel hunden"), originated from the Germans at the Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918 for the Marine’s relentless tenacity as vigorous shock troops and remarkable marksmen. The Marines assaulted the advancing German lines at Hill 142 five times and five times they were repelled however on the sixth assault the Marines broke through and eradicated the German presence from the forest.
