(Argh my internet died so this is coming out a day late)

Maggie and Zoe followed the Nautilus out of the ruined neighborhood, all that they could remember being left behind them. Even though for Zoe, memory only constituted being inside a dark box for who knows how long. Together with Maggie, the journey was quiet. Despite passing more ruined buildings there wasn’t much that was of interest until Maribeth said they were getting close, and the bodies started to accumulate.

Further they swam through the forest of corpses, each one lifted upwards, a futile attempt of the surface to take them back. Long cords from strange machines connected to their faces held them down in the deep. Writhing amongst the rancid flesh were a grim host of scavengers. They tore rapaciously through the dead, filling themselves to bursting with the meat.

”Seriously.” Maggie said quietly. “What… happened here?” Her question was met with silence from Zoe, despite her having the same thoughts on the matter.

Neither of them were exactly strangers to this kind of death, for it was evident in the waters behind them. But at this scale? It was far out of the ordinary for their already extraordinary setting. All the two could hope for was that whoever Maribeth’s boss was, they would be able to give some kind of explanation.

But what horror would that explanation behold?
