Description
Edit: Just made a few changes that I've been wanting to make for the past 2 years, but just never got around to doing, so finally here it is, new & revised!Another work in my viking theme
'Alone he stands in the doorway
His family still asleep
Gazing at the starlit horizon
And the moonsparkling sea
When dawn comes he must leave them
His home, his children and loved
For his destiny beyond those waves
Known only to the Norns
He's already dressed ready to leave
His four friends are waiting by the shore
Each with a dragon ship
And one hundred men prepared for war
He returns to his bed kissing
His sleeping wife goodbye
And as he leaves his youngest son
A tear rolls from his eye'
- part of song by the band Amon Amarth
I really love this piece, not only because the model is my man, but also because of my heartfelt and strong bond with the ancient history of the Scandinavians - My people.
I have ancestors in amongst others, Scotland and norway as well as Denmark.
My oldest (certain; mentioned more than 2 independent sources) ancestor was Rognvald "The Wise" Eysteinsson... Earl of More, Romsdal & Orkney.
- Born about 830 Maer, Nord Trondelag, Norway
- Died 890/94 Orkney, Orkney Islands, Scotland.

My mother has studied geneology for more than a decade as a hobby..

hehe yeah, I hate those horned portrayals too...
I bet its something the munks later added to the tales, to make them more devilish.. or maybe just how they seemed for the people they attacked..

Norsemen! Gotta love them, and nice facial expression. Its quite unique since the Norse are often potrayed to be snarling and warlike. This one is serene. (cool ancestor by the way)

indeed!
yeah they are all portrayed as war maniacs, and that is a shame, as really, most of them where farmers most of the time, only went on raids when called for by the king or chief, I bet a lot of them didn't even like it, and did so in the hope of riches to help them take care of their children enheritage wise after they are gone... mostly they where just like us, they just had to go to war more often than we do now

I guess the Me-Viking-Me-Love-To-Pillage image of the vikings is hugely responsible to the Saxons, the Scots, the Irish, Angles, Jutes, Byzantines, Arabs and all the other peoples they raided. They suffered a lot from the raiders, so they have a lasting image of them as wicked maniacs in their memories. Centuries later, these people spread out more than the vikings did, and therefore, spread the same image too.

Indeed It must've been very intimidating and scary seing them roam over the hills from the beaches, knowing they would slay all you loved and take all you owned
And to the christians that came after and spreading more than the heathen way of thinking also helped that image to grow

This work leaves me stunned and almost speechless every time I look at it. I have been fond of Vikings for my whole short life (ever since I found out what my surname "Nordman" means), and this picture somehow makes me yearn even more to sail at sea in a ship like that...
Congratulations also for having Viking ancestors; I wish were of such heritage too, but I highly doubt it *sighs*
Absolutely awesomely done: the lighting looks great and there is something painting-like in the picture, and like many before, I adore the eyes as well
It's amazing how you can transform pictures into anothers like this. I'm glad to have found a piece of art about Viking that look rather authentic (no horned helms, heh) and is also beautiful so this is definitely worth a favourite.

hehe yeap the horned helmets are a joke (I bet it was made up by monks who wanted people to think of the vikings as devils!)

Have you ever been to an amon amarth concert? Truely worth it. I have to say this image excites me so much to see others hold a fondness for vikings as I do myself. Your bloke makes a fantastic warrior. Congrats.

I'm very happy to see a REAL viking helm; they don't have bull horns, as so many draw/envision them to be (they've never even found one with horns). Thanks so much for the watch and favs too--I'm honored!

Weal Hael,
This is one of the most beautiful viking pictures I've seen! The lighting is gorgeous and the lovely little details, like the glint on the helm, it looks like it was really hand forged and the wonderful woolen fuzziness of the tunic. I'm afraid I'm not very good at comments, but I think it's brilliant!
