She lived up to her name "spring beauty" (春 chūn, "spring"; 麗 lì, "beautiful"), bestowed by her father.

As a child, she was trained by her father in tai chi and kung fu. Soon she too became a master in martial arts. But when her father, a member of Interpol, mysteriously disappeared, Chun-Li dedicated her life to solving the riddle why. At the China Branch Interpol Headquarters, she became the special investigator of Shadaloo. Soon she attempted to arrest its infamous leader for dealing drugs.

But, M. Bison would not go quietly. Overpowered, Chun-Li provided scant resistance as M. Bison punched her in the stomach with his Psycho Punisher. But impressed by her beauty, strength, and intensity, he turned the tables and recruited her to join his criminal organization. After her defiant refusal, M. Bison proceeded to board his getaway jet.

At that moment, he turned back to her and boasted, "I killed your father." However, if she continued to meddle in his affairs, M. Bison promised he would end of her life, just as he did his. Then he escaped into the clouds as Chun-Li lost consciousness and her vision faded to black.

After waking up in the hospital, Chun-Li vowed revenge and redoubled her efforts to bring her father's killer to justice. The policewoman worked around the clock. She transformed her elegant body into a lethal weapon. She became one of the strongest fighters in the world.

For years she tracked M. Bison's whereabouts around the globe and traveled to battle Shadaloo. With her impressively strong legs, she honed her signature techniques of Hyakuretsukyaku, Spinning Bird Kick, and Tenshokyaku. She unleashed these attacks along with her Kikoken and Kikosho on M. Bison's menacing minions. Unfortunately, their boss would always slip through her grasp.

Now in Metro City, Chun-Li entered the latest Street Fighter tournament. She felt her nemesis' chi nearby. His malevolent presence and taunting laugh sent a shiver through her spine. But she regathered herself to focus at the task at hand. She knew what she'd say when they met next.
