The progressive deterioration of the matter of the human brain, it's cognitive function and intellectual abilities, judgement, capacity for abstract thought, or any higher level cortical functions. Even as well as by changes of personality and behavior. Alzheimer's disease is not only rooted in memory loss, it is the continuous atrophy and inevitable decline of the human brain whereby connection among neurons sustain damage. It later effects areas of the cerebral cortex responsible for language, reasoning, and behavior. Early stages of the onset of dementia show in memory impairment and subtle personality changes. The gradual descend and apparantness into later stages often include various cognitive and behavioral changes. In the terminal stages, one becomes completely mute and inattentive and the ability to care for one's self is no longer present.
