hello everyone who isn't Shelik: Shelik wondered how i did [link] and it just so happened that i had uploaded some progress pics to facebook and this is it. you should know that One was my first every attempt at painting in photoshop, back in june last year. i've gotten a little better since then.

first picture is some line work marking the shape of the head and where the eyes, nose and lips will be. notice that the white of the eyes is not white, just very light orange.
then i used a big soft brush brush to paint shadows and highlights. i also managed to give her the thinnest eyebrows on the planet - and didn't correct them.
so the skin is now three colours: base orange, shadow brown, and highlight light orange with some yellow in it.
third picture: i make the highlights lighter and the shadows darker. i also added irises and pupils. irises are not *just* a base colour. there are hints of green, yellow and purple in her eyes, all smudged together with the blue.
fourth picture: hair! first a big blob of base hair colour, then smaller and smaller brushes to get every strand of hair. then i hit the dodge and burn tool and went craaazy with them for shadows and highlights. then i think i used the smudge tool to fuzzy up the edges of the hair.

so yes, i didn't even have a tablet! i would not have done it this way today, more than a year later. maybe i'll repaint this and see if i've gotten any better.
