Great job with the markings and expressions. I find it impossibly hard to put expressions on something with a beak, so I commend you for that.

I've never read the books but I recently saw the trailer and I've got to say I love have you've interperated these charaters in cartoon form.

There are a few ways of doing it with Photoshop, which is indeed what I use. The way I prefer is to make the sketch the topmost layer and set it to multiply, then, anything you paint underneath that layer will show through while preserving the pencil lines.
