In April of last year, we announced a partnership between deviantART and Madefire, bringing Madefire's signature Motion Books to deviantART and introducing a new form of storytelling to the world's largest art community.

We also announced that Madefire's professional-grade Motion Book Tool would be brought to deviantART—giving deviants the opportunity to turn imagination into a visual, auditory, and literary masterpiece, and showcase their art alongside some of the industry’s greatest creators.

After months of development and testing, we are excited to announce that the gradual release of the Motion Book Tool has begun, and you're (very likely) among the first to gain access. Having access to the Tool means you can create dynamic Motion Books just like the pros, and publish them directly from your deviantART account!

Getting Started

To check if you can use the Tool on your account, read the How To Access section of this article. If you do not have access at this time and want to try it out for yourself, leave a comment letting us know.

A variety of factors were taken into consideration when selecting the first group of deviants to be granted access the Motion Book Tool, and, in doing so, we compiled a diverse list of artists who were sure to bring creativity, enthusiasm, and skill to the Motion Book creation process.

What is a Motion Book?

Motion Books are a form of digital storytelling that users can read, share, and interact with. Stories unfold on screen through words, pictures, motion, and sound. The Motion Book format incorporates animation and sound design paced at the reader's control to completely immerse them in the experience. Motion Books are made using Madefire's Motion Book Tool, a mobile or in-browser software designed to create a dynamic storytelling experience.

How to Access the Motion Book Tool

You can easily access the Motion Book Tool by clicking on the "Make Motion Book with Madefire" button right now in your Sta.sh, or by visiting create.madefire.com. From there, you can sign-in using your deviantART account and begin using the Motion Book Tool.

Using the Motion Book Tool

The Motion Book Tool is designed with the professional in mind: powerful enough to handle complex panels, layouts, transitions, effects, and whatever else your imagination can create. This is the same Tool used by professionals to create the many high-quality Motion Books already found on deviantART—and now it’s in your hands!

Because it’s professional grade software (think After Effects), that produces a professional grade result, the Tool can be complicated at first glance. However, for artists willing to bring the Tool into their creative process, it’s extremely powerful and dynamic—allowing for nearly limitless artistic freedom.

Our friends at Madefire have provided a helpful Jump Start Guide, as well as video tutorials, to ease you into using and understanding the Motion Book Tool. We strongly encourage using these documents and videos to aid in your creation process, and we recommend you keep them handy when using the Tool, so you can easily explore the many options the Motion Book Tool has to offer.

For deviants who excel at illustration, but are not as comfortable with digital creation tools—or deviants who are tech-savvy but may not be visual creators—team up to create a collaborative masterpiece!

Your Feedback

This is only phase one for the Motion Book Tool’s release to deviants. If you’ve been notified that you have access, try out the Motion Book Tool for yourself and let us know what you think. We always appreciate your feedback, and we hope to improve and evolve the Tool as it reaches a wider audience.

Any feedback you have can be left in a comment on this article. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you encounter something that you feel is not expected behavior, please let us know!

Thank you for your interest in the Motion Book Tool, and also for helping us to bring a new method of art creation to deviantART!

Want to access the Motion Book Tool?
Please note that the Motion Book Tool is gradually being rolled out, and that this is the first phase of release. It will be made available to more deviants as development and usage progress. If you would like access to the Motion Book Tool in the future, comment on this Journal to let us know! Keep an eye on MotionBookTool for updates regarding the release.

Finally! I know it wasn't really an eternity of waiting, I was just impatient, but This. Is. Awesome.!

Good on you guys. I'm not going to just jump into it, though, I'm gonna work on my story before I try make it Motionbookanized. Already got a couple of rough drafts that I've never completed, no point adding to them until I know where I'm headed lol!

Guaha! Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Hi, I wanted to know how to make the animation for the cover pages, but it wasn't in the help guide yet.  So, I figured it out and wanted to share with the class.    This effect is called a "Parallax"  Here's a quick test page in my Sta.sh:

I've found a glitch, possibly.  I wanted to attach my test project to a Master Project, however, on upload, it did not make a web link, nor actually upload to my Sta.sh.  However, it didn't give a failure message either.  I had to remake the test project to repeat the error and then to try with no Master.  It worked as expected without a Master.  I had to recreate each time because there was no way I saw to remove the Master, even if I generated a new project ID.

wreckling  I am keeping a test log in the artist's comments of the sta.sh file in the parent comment.  I've notated a few errors I've encountered.  I think they may have been remarked on already.  I'll be updating this same file with testing different features.  So, any more that I find will be added there.

Hey there, sorry for the super late reply, but much appreciated, for this! I'll be reading through the comments you've got in the near future, but thank you for being so detailed in your testing!

Of course!  My pleasure, and my job.  As you may be able to tell, I'm pretty enthusiastic about this.  Been drawing out some storyboards for my project.  I'll keep adding more updates on tests/errors on that Sta.sh file.  I can send you a mention when it is updated if you like.

I watched their webcast on Friday.  Which answered some questions I had.  I should get some more testing in tomorrow.

I see you are no longer a 'thiefo' Thiefoworld  appears to be the avatar culprit now ;D

During some tryouts I noticed that there seems to be an issue with the text layers. After typing one letter, I always have to click in the field with the mouse to type another letter, and so on. So it seems to lose focus after each typed letter, if that makes any sense. Applying effects, like fade in, to text doesn't seem to work as well (when uploading it to s.t.a.s.h., I get an error message that says something like "unknown target" referring to the effect. After checking it, everything was set the way it is meant to be.

Effects do seem to work well for images though.

However, I haven't tried out enough to be more specific, but maybe for now it is better to work with textboxes that are imported images, rather than working with text layers.

From the ToS:

For all Developer Software offered to end users via deviantART, 20% of all gross revenues will be retained by deviantART and 20% of all gross revenues will be remitted to Madefire.

So does that mean if we sell a Motion Book, the artist gets 60% of the money the buyer paid?

It sounds like it... And if you submit it to for ios I think it's about 50%.. or less...

I followed the "Jump Start Guide" pretty easily, and uploaded to Sta.sh without a hitch.  This is wonderful!  Thanks for granting me access.  I may do some more trial pages for fun before I attempt an actual story.  Anyone who wants a look at my upload, it's in my Sta.sh:

Only thing was the font in the tutorial was not available.  I assume more fonts will be rolled out?  The selection was rather small.  I'll post more feedback after working on more projects.  The jump start was perfect to get the feel for the mechanics of using Madefire.

Answered my own question about fonts, I see in the User's Guide that you can upload fonts to use in the assets as TTF or AIF files.  Thought I'd put that info out there

Just tested out the demo and mostly everything works great! I got an error when testing out the "upload to sta.sh" option which I pasted below:

"There are problems with page 'Jump Start' that need to be fixed before you can publish this project:

• Sound layer 'Sound = Impact' on page size 'iPad (portrait): 768x1024' has no content. Please set the layer's sound file or delete the layer."

I'm confused since the impact sound plays at it's proper time when I click through the page.
