In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .


What's New


The New deviantART Mobile Site

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we've released a brand new version of the mobile site! The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.


Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile site to offer many more features than the previous version did, and it also makes for a more smooth user experience. The end result is a seamless mobile site, and it looks a little like this:



  • You can Browse art, check your Message Center, reply to Notes, browse your friends' Profiles and Galleries, visit the Forums, view today's Daily Deviations and do almost everything else you can on the desktop version of the site!
  • The drop down menu usually located in the top left corner of the site can be accessed by tapping on the deviantART logo, allowing you to easily access familiar tools without complication. 


  • You can find wallpapers for your phone using the "Wallpaper" app available in the main menu!
  • The Message Center is located in one place, which makes responding to comments and browsing art and Journals a quick, easy experience. Deviants who enjoy viewing their Message Center one section at a time can tap on the arrow next to "Messages" at the top of the Message Center. This will prompt the Message Center's left sidebar to appear and allow selection one section of the Message Center to view at a time.
  • Journal Skin designers, if you'd like control how your skin looks in a mobile browser, learn how to use our new mobile media queries .

Prints Integration on Deviation Pages

We've implemented an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.



We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.



Because the functionality of the old Prints pages has been added to the deviation page, you can now preview how your Prints purchase will look without having to leave the deviation page! Once you select a product type, the preview will update to reflect your selection.


The New Submit Art Page (Beta Testers Only)

Beta Testers, we're bringing you a complete revamp of the Submit Art page! While the page you're familiar with has been a long-standing part of deviantART, the new page is designed to be more intuitive, user-friendly, and up to date with deviantART as it is today.

Sta.sh
  • When changing the main file of an item originally uploaded through an app, the app attribution will now be cleared. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Non-Latin characters are now cleanly stripped from uploaded items' titles, as deviation titles still only support latin characters. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When going inside a stack, into an item, and then back to the stack, uploading a file inside the stack would put the file in Sta.sh instead of the stack. Fixed by kouiskas
Sta.sh Writer

  • Thumbnails of literature submitted through Sta.sh Writer appearing in stacks in the Message Center would have misaligned stack corners. Fixed by kemayo
  • Menus in Sta.sh Writer have been changed to be a little more responsive; you can now mouse from one to another without having to click. Fixed by kemayo
  • Classes are now allowed on span tags, for skinning purposes. Fixed by Alisey
  • Efficiency of fetching your Friends List in Sta.sh Writer's sidebar has been improved; less unnecessary data is pulled, and the menu builds faster. Fixed by kemayo and inazar

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update ! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.

  • The most common response regarding the friends system was that deviants would like an easy way to separate lists of who they watch from lists of deviants who are their friends. Dramira-Official mentioned that this could also be applied to the Message Center, where new messages from friends could be listed before the general watch section.
  • lohkk and Yamitora1 suggested that an easy means of managing and organizing one's friendslist would be helpful, and ShapeShifter314 mentioned that being able to search through one's friends list would be useful as well.
  • Some deviants would like stacks within folders in their Message Center. Suggested by Krisoyo
  • A search function in Group galleries would be helpful. Suggested by IcyPheonix
  • Deviants would like notes sent to Groups to be included in their Sent Notes folder. Suggested by alexpeanut and Magical525
  • It would be helpful to be able to add keywords to Groups, so that they can be found more easily when searching in the Groups Portal . Suggested by MartinSilvertant
  • Some members would like to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder. Suggested by Veroom

Another problem in mobile site is data size. I just checked on a folder that has background and the background itself took about 100kb of data. My phone can only crawl to about 400kb in 1 page, and even then, coupled with big thumbnail, only 4-5 pic in the gallery are shown. I have to either lower the pic quality or disable it entirely to open it one by one. I hope you can take it into account. Or do we have a way to disable folder css already 0_0?

I have a suggestion for picture submissions. I've been wondering for a while why you can't add previews to ordinary picture if the're really big or really wide or tall? I was thinking even if it's like where you can crop it down to a section of it like when submitting a profile picture. but just make that the way to add a preview to it. Obviously this should be optional. also i think you should be able to submit a preview by browsing folders like when submitting animated gifs or flash files. just thought i would suggest that. - This probably wont happen but oh well. It is worth a try XP

The new mobile site is awful. There's too much clutter and requires 3x the scrolling that the other one did. The 4 to a page thumbnails were fine before, I don't see why you got rid of them. Most of the buttons and links are too small to use without pressing something else by accident. The message center went from being simple to annoyingly complicated.

I just can't think of anything on the new site that's "better" than it used to be. I honestly thought it was broken the first time I used it, and that the mobile site just hadn't loaded for some reason.

Just my two cents.

Before anyone else complains about loading speed, I'd like everyone to try re-booting their routers and waiting 10 mins before turning it back on and trying the internet again. I just did and it's gone from really slow to really fast both on the computer and on the ipod touch.

Say if you're on dA on a Blackberry Curve, everything works fine except the messages. It will list as always however many you got, but once clicked on, it shows no messages at all, just a blank green space. Sort this and I'll be happy with the update.

I think that we need a way of collecting comic pages into one single deviation, rather than scattered pages. I would rather be able to sit down and read a chapter of a comic rather than go on a hunt for multiple pages in a person's gallery.

We also need the ability to subscribe to certain folders within a group. For instance, I might be in an anime group but have no interest in Naruto-themed fan art, so I would uncheck that box so I would receive no Naruto-themed art from that group. Or maybe the group, while it's a great group, has a mature folder. Rather than fill my inbox up with mature deviations or blanked out images, I could unsubscribe from that folder.

I also think there should be an ability to rate an artist's based on their commission transactions. It would allow feedback to others who are interested in commissioning an artist. It could contain information such as the start of the transaction (when the person paid), beginning of project (established by the artist), and date of completion. It could have the commissioner rate how satisfied they were with the communication with the artist, the speed of the artist, and other aspects of the commission. It could give future commissioners an idea of how well you work with your clients as well as the artist reviewing their client. This could also be reversed to show how good of a client users are.

Ssh no, don't make deviantart takes part in commission work of artists. They'll take money just to display all the stats you mentioned. /more money, price goes up, client lessen/ Quiet, quiet. To do that now you could just use journal and ask people who commissioned you to rate you in the comment.

I personally think you might lose a few members because of your new mobile site. I personally hate it. I'm always on my phone since I'm in school. Now, it takes forever, especially with the notes. I'm always using notes, and now I really hate it.
Every so often, the old mobile site shows and I get happy, but then it immediately changes back when I refresh. I wish the old site was back, really.

I role play as well in my notes, and now its such a hassle and takes too much time to just write ONE. Its really disappointing. They probably wont even listen to us. From what I hear, they haven't been very good at listening to the communitys opinions.

I personally never thought it was crappy. It could be improved, such as making sure your comments were posted and you could view pictures with a warning. The notes were fine for me. Made it easier for me and my phone.

First off, the mobile site is okay, i wish it was a little easier to navigate. Plus, if you try to change to desktop mode while on the PS3 browser, the page becomes even worse. I would like to show you what it looks like but, it leads me into my second point. It is impossible to upload from a PS3 with the new submission page. Although i'm sure i'll love using it in the future, at the moment i can't. I have no access to a legitimate computer.

Deviantart, when we said to change the mobile site, we did not mean to tear it all down and replace it with a horrendous piece of shit meant for the latest iPhones.

We meant to add in a favorites button, a comments section for profiles, and being able to see all our messages, like group messages and correspondance items.

Instead of doing that, you got lazy and scaled down the desktop site, and passed it off as a poor excuse for an iPhone app, which you then passed off as a poor excuse for a mobile site.

Now change it back to the way it was until you can come out with a new mobile site that actually works on non-smartphones. How many times do we have to say this to get you to listen?

Ah well, this is not really related to these new updates, but today I was just editing a journal with a "ç" in the title, and it wouldn't allow me any more as it was not listed in the symbols that were permitted. I would appreciate it if these accents could be allowed once more to be a part of titles for journals at the least, and even perhaps in deviations since it's nice to entitle works in French at times. Thank you~

The mobile site is okay, but maybe it's my fault for having a blackberry loving family XD. I'm sure it works faster on iPhones, pods, pads, and Androids, but it certianly seems as though blackberry gets the short end of the stick. The old Mobile version works a lot betterthan the new one on my phone, and I can't use my iPod 24/7 like I can my phone.

What was wrong with the old mobile version, the new version takes 3-4 times longer to load. And I know its not on my end other websites load just fine. The layout is a mess and the buttons are very hard to activate. Please stop.

The new mobile site is great. I really wanted this for a long time.
Though I'm facing some problem.

1. When I want to add a deviation to my favorites and want to choose the folder using the down arrow next to 'Add to Favourites' the folder list will never load. The little red emoticon pushes with its arms and happens nothing.

2. When I add a deviation to my favourites, it immediately brings me back to the 'left side' of the page where the picture, comments are. But usually when I add something to my favourites I also download it. It would be good to stay on the 'right side' of the page where the buttons, share, infos are.

3. I can only see one deviation in a row in the message centre even if hold my mobile horizontal. There is enough space for two too. So I have to scroll more.

If you could check these things and fix it, I would be grateful.

New mobile site format is horrible. Those of us not using a iWhatever or an android device seem to be dismissed in this update.
You really need to test on other mobile browsers to see how poorly it formats.

I personally have a Windows Phone and it looks horrible.

I like it..was a bit confusing at first, but I use the desktop layout on my android,,looks good, and works fine with sending off comments..notes I'm not sure yet..
