BL=Boys Love, ie male+male pairings.Β It's what most people outside Japan call "shounen ai."Β While that term used to be the standard in Japan during the 80s and 90s, these days it is mostly used for relationships involving prepubescent boys ("shouta" aka pedophilia).Β Because of the negative connotations, "shounen ai" has fallen out of favor and the term "BL" is preferred.Β Hope that helps!Β
