the first snow comes suddenlywith wild winds
enveloping the earth
with white hands
holding everything silent
for a moment
too soon come machines
and hands
and feet
to move around
to toss around
to trample
too soon once-virgin white
is marred
then arrives the second snow
hushed and gentle
not covering but filling
quietly
the holes left by careless boots
softening the edges
carefully
renewing the broken white
there's something sacred
in the second snowfall
