Hi.

I'd meant to post this a while ago, as interest was expressed in posting the original plate photo for my Flussdorf image. Just got swept up in various things.

This was for a matte painting challenge at CGSociety for a project called Kreola - After Earth.

It was pretty cool.

Both images compiled in this post are their original posting size. It's just that plates (original project images) have normally been provided extra large for matte painting detailing purposes since the beginning of cinema, really, when mattes were actually done with oil paints. The final movie image is later reduced in size.

Now, I find it personally worth noting that, because I sort of missed the whole hand-painting challenge of the earlier movie production days, I decided to challenge myself anyway and take that type of approach.

So, while the modified image on top was made in Photoshop, everything was added by hand. I felt like saying so. No photo elements, no cloning, no copying. Everything was added with a soft round brush and a Wacom tablet, using various brush modes, like lighten, darken and dodge and burn.

Just like the old days, eh? (Right). I know a lot of it is obvious.

But hey, that was the challenge I set for myself and I didn't feel like letting that slip by. However it is REAL time consuming and probably why some areas look more hand drawn than others.
