I started work on this portrait 2/16/10, the reference photo was taken by a friend Kathy when she saw Mr. Cook in concert. Once I saw the photo I knew I had to draw it. I love that dramatic lighting that forms his face, it's been a lot of fun seeing this one slowly come to life.I started out using my 3b mechanical pencil, a small blending stump, kneaded eraser and a little B pencil.
for the BG I put down some powdered graphite and blended. To get the highlights in his hair I left the white of the paper untouched and drew/colored in around the areas. I put down another layer of the powdered graphite on the BG and then darkened the shadowed areas with a 3b mechanical pencil.

Edit 3/4/10: I took a new photo of the drawing, it looks a little better then the scan.

As amazing as the drawing is as a whole, I think I love the background the most, especially its mottled effect. Really brings out the rest of the image, although so do the crisp highlights.

Wow, you're right, that IS some dramatic lighting, really a beautiful thing you did there, replicating your friend's amateur, yet very dynamic picture.
Leaving the paper untouched is what most people mess up, including me xD, but it is an awesome way to accent highlights, and not use an already colored paper, to then add highlights with chalk and whatnot. It keeps the idea that traditional art is all about really REALLY hard work, and you're really not forgiven if you make mistakes.

The lighting in this is gorgeous and the texture you have achieved in such places as the beard is admirably. Great skin tone ... I just love the whole composition and those highlights are special. Great job on this.

what can I sat, there is no word, that can describe a passion of you and and the greatness of your fingers, which combine together gives such an amazing draw. In every single new draw is visible progress of your talent, which makes your work worth effort, but if your works are so close to excellent, where it will finish? I am scared like shit, what you will be doing in five years from now. I simply can't imagine how brilliant it will be, where are the limits. Ending that comment, you are spectacular artist.
