Description
I started work on this portrait 2/16/10, the reference photo was taken by a friend Kathy when she saw Mr. Cook in concert. Once I saw the photo I knew I had to draw it. I love that dramatic lighting that forms his face, it's been a lot of fun seeing this one slowly come to life.I started out using my 3b mechanical pencil, a small blending stump, kneaded eraser and a little B pencil.
for the BG I put down some powdered graphite and blended. To get the highlights in his hair I left the white of the paper untouched and drew/colored in around the areas. I put down another layer of the powdered graphite on the BG and then darkened the shadowed areas with a 3b mechanical pencil.
Finished portrait 2/23/10:
12 x 17 Graphite on Illustration Board
Edit 3/4/10: I took a new photo of the drawing, it looks a little better then the scan.
Thank you everyone for all the wonderful comments, I have read each and everyone of them!

Whoops, forgot to add this question: when you draw, do you grid your paper first?

Yes, I print a grid on one of the ref photos and then draw a light grid on the paper/board

Linda- ALWAYS a visual treat to see your work! I can see why you were 'drawn' to draw this, the lighting is fantastic! How cool that your friend got this amazing of a photo for you to work from! Did you mask off any of your drawing while putting down the graphite powder? Sounds like it might be a bit messy, I don't do well with messy (lol).

Michelle I think I hate the powder graphite... yep i do! I had used it on a few other drawings and had problems but this time it really did'nt give me a nice dark background so i had to go back over most of it with a pencil. Oh and no mask, I was just very careful.

I have a couple of short ones on my website (drawing tips section). I need to buy or borrow a really good video camera and make a reallly detailed tutorial one year.

You are right, the lighting in this is incredible! And I am a big fan of the blended graphite background; I love the drama it adds to an image (though I admit to using it frequently to hide all my errors! ). Best of all, I love his hair! The I've-just-run-my-fingers-through-this-sweaty-mess look! You've captured it so well!!

To get graphite powder do you simply grind some graphite sticks?

It comes in a jar, I bought some at an art supply store.
