Last of my 80's cartoon villains set: Cobra commander from GI JOE! I hope you guys enjoyed this set. I feel like this has helped me tighten up my art and I learned quite a bit from this experience. It definitely was a challenge in trying to do the original characters justice.Next up, I will post tutorials of some of these guys before revealing the legend of Zelda set I've been working on. That is considered a plot hole because in the comics, C.C. was 100% human and started out as a used car salesman who became so bitter and enraged at his brother's death that he became the leader of COBRA!

The Cobra Commander from the comics was NOT a buffoon! Even in the cartoon he had at least a few (VERY few...) moments that made you think that maybe there was a good reason he managed to keep COBRA from going belly-up! But in the comics, he was a ruthless, but charismatic leader capable of coming up with some VERY clever plans! Sure even there, his overconfidence got the best of him FREQUENTLY. But he STILL proved time and again just how effective he could be when he was motivated! I think that was pretty much the whole point of his character. At FIRST C.C. was satisfied with what he had and willing to settle for being an ordinary man, with an ordinary life... But one day, his brother was tragically killed! That was the day C.C. decided he was trapped in a world that forever takes advantage of "The LITTLE Guy". So he figured he needed to change the world for the better! And somehow, he eventually gained the power to do just that! I think that C.C. was actually a BORN LEADER but before hos brother was killed he was was okay with the life he had but realized his full potential afterwards! In a way, we should see that as a reason to see him as the "REAL AMERICAN HERO" of G.I. Joe. Sadly, while C.C.'s intentions may be pure, his methods are the exact opposite! But he was still able to convince MILLIONS of people to join him in the most fanatical way possible! So in a way, he's a tragic villain because he wants to make the world a better place... By assuming the ends will justify the means... And insisting that YOU DO TOO...

Yeah, I think that's one of the many reasons "G.I. Joe: The Movie"from the 80's gets so much hate! Cobra Commander's origin doesn't make sense! He always seemed so human to me, and the movie claimed his origin was that he was some sort of mad scientist/"Nobleman from a secret society of SNAKE PEOPLE! It gets even worse because to top it off he gets turned into some kind of ACTUAL Snake just because his action figure was discontinued! ARGH!

These 80s villians have been AMAZING! I've enjoyed them all.

I don't see the shattered visor very often, but man, you nailed it! The Commander seems almost unhuman because we can't see his eyes with that mask, in comparison to his hood, but when you can see one of those piercing blue eyes, it really humanizes him and brings in all the more emotion. He totally looks like he's saying: "And now, you will REALLY pay!"

Thanks for the kind words! I thought it would be cool to show what he looks like underneath the mask. I pictured him finally defeating hawk and gripping his dog tags with satisfaction. Not sure why, I like it when the bad guys win.
