Among the unusual anatomy, they have noticed one final feature that they and the purple creature seemed to share - in an exact location as well. From their observations of life here, each creature sported one (or more) of these dark-colored gems somewhere along their body, and although they did not understand much out of what the purple one had said, it seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the topic.

If there were no current way out of this place, then learning all about it in the meantime could not hurt, right? After all, if they were to come across another person from home, they may be able to help them out.

THEY ARE LEARNING. haha just wait until they see someone funking. raise part of the ocean /j
(though water's probably more of the tamer magic, i think they'll question all life if they see someone disguised as them)
