Description

My 2nd ship of my "Orbitober" challenge inspired by the prompt "spin". One of my favorite sci-fi shows is Babylon 5 which features Earth Force ships that have parts of their hulls spinning to simulate gravity with centripetal force. So I thought it would be fun to draw up a ship that looks like it belongs on Babylon 5 with a part of its hull that spins. This is the Colt Class Cruiser named after the colt revolver due to its appearance with the central cylinder rotating and looking similar to the revolving bullet chambers of the pistol. Only several ships were constructed after the Earth-Minbari War as a stop gap until the Babylon project could get underway. These ships would ferry diplomats and trade dealers securing earths relations with the other space fairing races while at the same showing how quickly earths military was recovering. Despite their status as ambassador ships they were armed well enough to challenge other ships of the same size and also carried a squadron of starfury fighters. After Babylon 5 came online the Earth senate had the ships decommissioned from their dignitary service and then they became test beds for new earth weapons systems until they were decommissioned during the Earth Alliance civil war where they became target practice for Earth Force ships preparing for an attack on Babylon 5. They say one or two ships have survived, were then sold off and are out wondering the stars.
