Stacy and Mark both had childhoods that, while not utterly horrible, were hardly pleasant. Stacy was orphaned at seven and handed off to an uncle which was never that interested in the girl that had been foisted on him. Mark's parents came from a large poor family and his prospects were limited. Never the less they came together when both of them met up at a Canada Day festival when they saw the performance of a remarkable troupe of female clowns and were impressed. This started an acquaintance which grew steadily into a friendship by the next year when they saw them again when they returned. Afterwards they began following them online, noticing as their act improved, their cast expanded and they played larger venues. When they were fourteen managed to beg and scrounge up enough money to spend a week at a summer camp the troupe had set up in northern Saskatchewan, practicing basic slapstick in costumes and makeup which, despite trying, was never anywhere near as good as those of the twenty four clown Councillors and junior Councillors which ran the operation or the "family girls" which they found out were their relatives of the same and had tents to their own. It was about that time when they began to think of themselves as being more than just friends. They continued to follow the troupe from then on and even made friends with a couple of its members, which remained a quirk even though they never saw them out of character.

Then, when they were both nineteen they were both invited out by one of the of the clowngirls named Dotsy and were given something of an explanation about their nature and history, their creation by an eccentric who grew the first clowngirls in tanks nearly forty years before, fleeing to escape, the raising of new families, the establishment of their troupe to gain money and do what they loved (performing and making humans laugh) even with the rise of coulrophobia and the gradual expansion of their kind to make their place in this world. They had been monitoring them they figured that they were prime material for recruitment into their family as full members, even though it would involve more than just a species transformation for mark.

Stacy was overjoyed, but had worries in regards to Mark's opinion and how this could mean a breakup for them. Fortunately this did not come to pass. For Mark, his life held prospects of an endless series of bland boring jobs at best. If the alternative was making a big change and staying with Stacy he took it. The next day they gave Dotsy their answer and were given a pair of glasses containing a retroviral solution that would begin the change. After a small bit of trepidation they both downed the sweet liquid and with that their lives would be forever changed.
