Description
The Grognor is a herbivorous beast that weighs about 1.5 to 2 tonnes. It is descended from more primitive amphibious herbivores, but has since refined it's body plan. It's a more efficient herbivore for starters better able to break down plant material than it's bulky ancestor. It's legs are also better able to support it's body allowing it to move more quickly overland as well as making it able to traverse more and rougher terrain over the course of a day. It's skin is better able to retain moisture allowing it to cross plains of ferns and go deep into forests in search of food and has a series of knobby lumps of keratin along it's back. For while it evolved, larger and more deadly predators evolved as well and both speed and protective armor were both winning survival traits. They have an elongated neck and eye turrets to better find predators.
Grognors have developed hard shelled ping pong ball sized eggs which they lay in clutches of up to three hundred or so up to three times a year that they bury in leaf litter. Like their ancestors, all Grognor hatchlings are male and metamorphose into females after getting to about 200 kilos. Full grown Grognors are often followed around by a harem of a dozen semi-mature males waiting for the female to enter estrus until the metamorphose and enter estrus themselves. At that point the older female will smell the pheromones of her new rival and drive her off, often with a younger male following the new female.
