Description
It was a lonely place really.Empty halls, empty rooms. Nothing much to full the mansion but the emptiness. And him. And her.
Only two 'people' filling the empty space.
He had been here for god knows how long, and herself, she had been here for a couple of months. And he hadn't opened up at all. She wasn't the most open of people, but she had talked to him and was always open for him to talk to her about whatever was on his mind. But he kept quiet. Only talking if necessary.
She wouldn't have minded too much, if they weren't the only two in there. He seemed moody. And he never turned to his human form in front of her, just stayed in his afterform. An afterform is almost like an afterimage. Once you die, you can either change into your human form, or stay looking like a skeleton, in the chest is a bright coloured heart. His being a bright blue. She happened to have a purple one. They still wore clothes, and could still talk and everything.
She herself would switch between her afterform, her human form, and the ghost form. A black shadow.
She was making her way down the corridor. "Ah, Lewis, hi." She said, smiling as she changed back to her human form and walked over. He went to walk straight past her. "Hey!" She said, causing him to turn back to her.
"I'm busy Exza..." He said.
"What skulking around the halls?" She asked sarcastically. "Just saying hi... Don't let me bother you..." She turned and began walking away. Hearing him sigh behind her and footsteps leading away.
She continued walking, going into her room and sitting on the bed. There were drawings and sketches she'd done and hung up on the walls to make the place feel more homely. Sketches of things she could remember from her past life, though she didn't remember how she died... What happened during that life, who she was. It had taken a while just to remember her name. And without the internet at this mansion where she was somehow linked to, she couldn't search for herself and see if she could find anything.
Lewis had explained that time was strange in this place. It didn't matter when you died, people turned up at different times and realms. Himself, he could have died after her but been sent here years before. She didn't really understand it, but she would just nod.
She heard a knock on the door.
"Yeah...?" She opened it, looking out and seeing Lewis.
"Were going out tomorrow." He said, frankly.
"Out...? As in... Outside?" She asked, seeing his plain expression on the boney features.
"Yes. We need to go shopping. Get out in the world, be around other people. This house... Makes it so that we need supplies, food... Sleep... Etc." He said looking into her eyes casually.
"Yeah... Ok." She said, there was a moment of silence. And just like that, the man turned and walked away down the corridor. "G...goodnight?" She called after him, not getting a reply. She closed the door, sighed, and then laid in her bed. Letting sleep come over her.
------------
She heard a smash, and sat up.
"Lewis...?" She asked, standing. She made her way down the corridor. "You're not having another mad smashing session are you...?" She continued towards the front of the house, where she heard screaming, shouting, yelling. And more smashing. She stood at the foot of the stairs, watching as Lewis was stood at the front door, people running away across the golden fields of wheat to the front. She noticed he was in his real form, and decided to make her was under the stairs to avoid being spotted.
He turned, but she couldn't make out his features, as the moonlight behind him was the only light. He walked past her, into his room past the stairs, and she could swear she heard him sniffle. She stood there for a moment, before walking over to the door, feeling the cold breeze on her face, and then closing it. Shutting off the moonlight. She then made her way to his room, slowly opening the door. She did it quietly so that he didn't hear.
The first thing she noticed was that he hadn't gone back to bed, because it was empty. She looked toward the window, hearing quiet sobbing. She made her way into the room, and over to him, putting a hand on his shoulder.
He turned, suddenly, looking to her. It was the first time she had seen his human form... She liked it.
"W...what are you doing in here?! What do you want?!" He asked, defensively.
There was a moment.
"Why... Why are you staring at me like that...?" He continued.
She was taking in his features, the tear tracks running down his pale cheeks. Raven hair flopping over his forehead and his brown eyes sad.
"Y...you're... In your human form..." She said, not wanting to inform him of the fact in case he turned back.
She watched his quickly look to his hands, noticing the skin that lined them. And he quickly changed back to the skeleton form.
"No!" She shouted, a little louder than she meant. "No... Please..." She said. Noticing his bright blue heart was broken. But, opposite to what she thought would happen, the heart was gone. He was back in his human form again. "I'm sorry... Its just. I've never seen you in your human form before..." She gave a small smile.
"I'm sorry..." He spoke, quietly.
"What for...?"
"I've... Been horrible to you..." He said, his voice almost a whisper.
She looked down, noticing a picture in his hand. A blonde woman, wearing an owl hat. "Who...?" She asked. Watching his raise his hand.
"Hannah..." He turned, fresh tears streaming down his cheeks. "We broke up... And I don't know how much time passed between then and... My death..." He rested his hands on the desk.
"That was the girl... One of the people that were... Outside..." Exza said.
"I loved her... She was... The only person for me..." He spoke, quietly. His back still turned to her.
She stood for a moment, feeling her own heart cracking in her chest. There was a moment, a moment of time that seemed to last forever. And then, she was off, walking quickly down the corridor, back to her room. She closed the door, walked into the on suite, and closed the door, walking over to the wall and the silence invaded the room. And she cried, resting against the wall, holding her hand in front of her face as the tears escaped her eyes. She felt like she would throw up.
And when she looked across the room into her mirror, and saw her skeletal reflection. The purple heart shattered in her chest. All the pieces stuck in the bottom half of the shell. She forced herself to change back to her human form, knowing her heart would stay in place and that she wouldn't lose any pieces like that.
------------
"Exza?" Lewis asked, walking up the stairs. "Exza...?" He continued down the corridor towards her room.
He knocked, opening it. "Exza...?" He poked his head round the door.
She wasn't in her bed, but the bathroom door opened and she walked out, drying her hair with a towel. She stopped, seeing him.
"Hi..." He said, stepping in. She sat on her bed.
"Hi..." She answered.
"Shopping..." He said, almost blurting it out. She looked to him, seeing that he was in his skeletal form, though when she had first walked in he had been in human form. "We... Uh, need to go shopping." He said. "So..." He shook his head slightly, almost trying to shake himself back to how he usually was. "Get changed and meet me downstairs in half an hour. Black clothes. Protect from the sun. Sunglasses if you can. Etc. I'll be waiting." He said, before walking out, slamming the door behind him.
She sighed. "Fine..." She spoke to herself.
------------
They were walking through the supermarket, both at the back of a trolley. Clad in black clothes. They were silent.
"Didn't think we could leave that house... For some reason." Exza finally spoke.
"We can. But we cannot stay out of the house, not without all of our memories. Otherwise we'd just fade." Lewis answered, grabbing something and putting it into the trolley. They were stood very close together. Reminded her of one of her friends she had known at one point, though she would walk ark in arm with him, talking about fashion and Broadway, etc. Kurt, she remembered his name being.
"Can we not get WiFi or... A TV...? Or something? Can we not go back to our homes and grab things?" She asked.
"Well... I guess. But we don't have enough time today. Besides, do you ever remember where your house is?" He looked to her. He was right, she remembered what it looked like, exterior and interior... But not where it was. Especially not in comparison to where the mansion was.
"What about clothes? I mean... Now that you seem ok in your human form...?" She asked, looking up at him. She caught his eyes and looked away.
"I'm not comfortable to say the least... But... It is good to be in human form again."
She could swear she noticed a small smile.
"At any rate, if you would like to buy some clothes then that's fine by me. You can help me find some as well, after all... I'm not exactly the best with clothes." He continued.
"I don't know, my mate knew a lot about fashion and he would be pleased with what you're wearing." She smiled.
"Really?" He looked down at himself.
"Yes, very camp." She smirked.
"Camp?! I find that offensive." He said. "But what do I know... Oh well." He placed some more things in the trolley and came to walk next to her again, seeming closer than before.
"We should go for tea." He spoke suddenly.
"W...what?" She said.
"I haven't had a good cup of tea in a while. I'm not good at making them." He said, smiling. It was strange to see him smiling. But nice.
"You should have let me know, I make good drinks." She smiled.
"Really? Well I still know a great place close to here."
"As long as I don't have to have tea, not a massive fan to be honest."
"Oh really? Well then we'll find something." He said, smiling.
They continued walking, chatting about different things. It was nice for him to open up for once, even if what he had said the night before still stung her. But she found herself liking his human form more and more. She would have to convince him to stay in that form more often. For now she was just happy that he was acting like a friend.
