The following story really happened.
I saw it with my own eyes.
Maybe it didn't happen as I saw it, but more on that later.
We were all going out camping.
Me, and three friends from university.
Let me introduce my friends...
This is Honeydew. I wouldn't say that he is our group of friends leader... or actually, I would. He's the one that always gets us out of the house and into the action. He's the first one to hit on that cute girl by the bar, he's the first one to jump from the roof into the swimming pool. According to himself, he was even more impulsive when he was a kid. I can only imagine his childhood, and how often he must have broken his leg, scraped his knees and hit his head. Still, if it wasn't for Honeydew, we wouldn't have half the amount of fun we have.
This girl is Xevphera. We have known each other since we were children. We met each other when she moved into the house next door when I was 7. My mum told me to go show her around the neighbourhood and after that we were inseparable for a few years. She's a nice girl, although her health isn't the best. She has some kind of heart problem, which I forget the name of. This forced her to be away from school during extended periods of time during her childhood. Because of this, until we started university, I was her only friend. Still, she never complained and I've always seen her as a positive, happy girl.
Next is me. I'm Xephos. As the name implies, i'm pretty normal. I don't have any overwhelming bad qualities, but on the other hand I don't have any good ones either. I live in this apartment a short walk away from my university. This is where us four friends usually gather before going out.
This guy here, looking all relaxed on my bed is Lalna. He's my neighbour, living in the apartment next door. One day, while I had Xevphera over, he just barged in. "Hey man, your place looks pretty nice, mind if I join you for dinner?", he said. As you can imagine, he's pretty pushy. I don't think he realises it himself. He came over several times after that day. After that, we somehow naturally became friends.
So, one day Honeydew came with the idea that we should go camping. Honeydew said his family had a cabin a little bit into the forest. So camping we went. It could be fun, right? Of course me, Lalna and Xevphera disliked the idea of staying in a cabin. It's a camping trip. We have to sleep in the wilderness. So Honeydew told us about the woods near the cabin. I don't remember much about the trip to the cabin. We joked around, took a few breaks. Normal stuff. Either way, we drove up to the cabin and left the car there. We took a short break in the cabin and set out into the wilderness. We went pretty far in, I cant say how far in distance really, but it took several hours to get to where we set up camp. The first day we just screwed around, nothing abnormal happened. But then...
I stepped out of the tent after getting changed and walked around the burnt out fire we had set up the night before to Xevphera.
"You sleep well last night?" she asked, I nodded in response and made my way over to Honeydew. Well, I guess it was kinda stupid to walk over to him, seen as he was snoring quiet loudly as he lay with his back against the tent. So, I made my way over to Lalna who was just on the outskirts of the small clearing in the woods we had found.
"Mornin' there. Or should I say good afternoon?" He folded his arms and nodded behind him. "Fix us some wood for a fire, will ya?"
I walked past him, I set out to gather wood for a new fire and water to cook with. I picked up one pile of logs and began to make my way into the woods in search for more. The place we had set up was down a winding path which was now overrun with a small, but still Seibel through, fog. I could hear birds whistling, which was a good sign, I didn't really like to not be able to see very well, especially in the woods.
"What is that sound?" I asked myself. A faint metal scrapping/clanging sound was ringing through the forest every few seconds. "It doesn't sound like something you'd hear in a forest..." I walked forwards and picked up some water from the small flowing stream with my bucket. "There we go, a bucket of water." I made my way back tot he camp, not wanting to stay away from my friends for too long in that fog. "The sound stopped..." I turned back and walked up to Lalna.
"My head hurts..." He said casually, I gave a smile and walked back to the other two who were at camp. I made my way to Xevphera.
"We had quiet a lot of fun yesterday, didn't we?"
"Yeah, it was a lot of fun." I answered and smiled to her. I would have gone back to Honeydew, but he was still asleep, typical. So, I walked to the cooking pot and poured the water in. "We can cook now." I told whoever was listening. "I should have enough wood to make the fire last a while tonight." I added before placing the wood in the middle of the rock circle we had made the night before.
"Alright, let's cook something up, shall we?" Xevphera asked and walked to the other side of the fire.
Later that evening...
We were all sat around the camp fire in a circle. Having had a bit of time after dinner before going to bed I decided to ask everyone how they were feeling. I turned to Honeydew first.
"What the hell is up with this fog?" he asked before I had a chance to speak. "Every time I've been here before there haven't ever been any fog."
"It's time to go to sleep soon." Lalna interrupted, it was getting hard to see them. "We're all out of booze! Guess we have to go back to town tomorrow." he added as he threw his empty beer can into the rubbish bag we had. "I'm not looking forward to that 4 hour trek. Maybe we shouldn't have gone so deep in Haha."
"It's really chilly outside for being the middle of summer." Xevphera said as she wrapped my jacket more around her shoulders. I had let her borrow it because she hadn't brought her own. "Hey... anyone else hear that sound?" she asked and we all stopped and listened. The metal clanging sound was back again, only slightly louder.
"Yeah... now that you mention it. What is that?" Honeydew asked.
"Sounds like something metally." Lalna stated.
"Metally? Haha! Is that even a word? Are you stupid?"
"Shut up asshole! It's a word if I say so."
Xevphera looked from left to right and stood up. "It stopped... maybe it was some kind of machine?"
"Who the hell would go out hours from the nearest civilisation in the middle of the night... and start revving up some kind of weird machine?" Lalna interrupted.
"Who give a shit? It's probably just someone using a chainsaw or something." Honeydew answered. 'Well that's also not good' I thought to myself. "Lets go to sleep. I'm tired." he said, and everyone made their way into the tent.
"As someone's revving up a chainsaw..." I whispered under my breathe in a joking way. Xevphera turned to me.
"I'm sure that was no chainsaw... I wonder what it was." she said and walked into the tent.
Sleepiness soon overtook everyone...
You looked down to see the open tent flap at your feet. You heard twigs snapping outside.
...But something woke you up a few hours later. In your half-wake state, you stumbled outside the tent.
It was dark, the fire had almost burned out, but the sound of twigs snapping could still be heard. "Honeydew? Lalna? Xevphera? Is that you?" I squinted to see in front of me "The mist is even thicker than before...I cant see much." I began to walk out into the clearing and then down the path. A strange sound could be heard as I walked up and up the path. And then. I stopped in my tracks.
"H-Honeydew is that you?" I asked the black figure that stood but a little bit in front of me down the winding path. "Say something w-will you? Who are you?"
It turned. It stepped forwards.
"Woah! Stop right there, I have a knife!" I shouted to the figure. I took a few more steps forwards. I heard strange and unrecognisable whispering coming form all directions. It continued forward. "Shit!" I shouted when it was but a few feet away. I ran, down back across the winding path, taking a different but circling route to the one I had walked up. I stopped and turned. The whispering was still in my ears. "I'm going back to the tent!" I told myself so that I would continue moving. I carried on running, no matte how much I wanted to see what that thing was. I saw the fire and ran to the mouth of the tent, jumping inside and landing in the middle of two of my friends.
"Hey! Wake up, there is something outside the tent!" I shouted to my friends.
"Uhhh... what?" Xevphera's voice came.
"Ugh... I'm sure there is. Lots of squirrels and shit. Go back to sleep." Honeydew said sleepily.
"Hey, Is Lalna here?" I asked.
"Mmm... yeah im here. Why wouldn't I be?" Lalna answered.
"I don't know... the thing outside looked like you." I answered.
"It was probably some animal." Honeydew stated. "I don't think we have to worry about a fox or whatever. Take it easy and go back to sleep."
"Well... Alright then. Maybe it was just some animal..." I said, it was dark and foggy after all. 'But those sounds...'
...A few minutes later...
Laughing. Laughing directly outside the tent.
"Ok drop it, whoever that is. I want to sleep already." Honeydew said.
"It wasn't me..." Lalna said sleepily.
"Me neither..." I added.
"That didn't sound like any of our voices." Xevphera stated.
"Well shit. Now im never going to be able to sleep." Honeydew said with a slight bit of edginess in his voice.
"S-should we go outside and look?"
"What fi it's some crazy psycho with an axe?" Lalna asked casually.
"All the more reason to check it out." Honeydew answered. "It's not like the tent is some kind of impenetrable fortress."
"Seriously if that was one of you guys tell me right now." Xevphera said firmly. "This ain't funny anymore." No one said anything. "..."
"Alright everyone get out together and check it out. I ain't going alone." Lalna finally said.
We stepped outside the tent.
"What the heck is that?!" Lalna asked. A dead squirrel was lying in front of the fire.
"Someone was definitely here! Shit!" Xevphera shouted. "Shit! Shit! Shit!"
"C-calm down Xevphera. We are four against one here." Honeydew said. "It'll be fine."
"What if the due got some kind of weapon on him?" Lalna spoke up. "I mean, he killed this little critter, didn't he?"
"Lalna's right! We gotta get the hell outta here!" Xevphera interrupted.
"We can't just up and leave. Its the middle of the night. What about our stuff?" Honeydew said.
"Screw our stuff! I'm not staying here another minute."
"Fine, we'll leave. But at least bring the flashlight and some food and water. I think you're overreacting though. We haven't seen anyone."
"Still, someone or something left this dead creature here." Lalna stated. "We can't exactly go back to sleep no worries."
"I guess you're right... I'll go get the flashlight. Everyone bring some stuff you think we might need."
A couple of minutes later...
"Alright, lets go." Honeydew said and we all began to walk across the clearing and down the winding path. We carried on in silence until we got to the point just after where I had seen the figure.
"It's so dark..." Xevphera stated.
"At least It's still summer. It's not pitch black." Lalna answered.
"This fog is really annoying though." Honeydew complained.
"So were going back to the cabin, right?"
"I guess that's the plan."
We continued walking.
A while later it became obvious that Honeydew had no idea where we was going. He was swearing and looking all around.
"We have been walking for awfully long now..." Xevphera said sarcastically. "Are you sure were on the right path Honeydew?"
"I've walked this path hundreds of times. Were on the right path."
"I don't recognise anything from when we were walking to the camp though..." Lalna stated.
"I said were on the right path!"
But as time went on, it became obvious that Honeydew had no idea where we were. Honeydew couldn't find the path. Maybe it was the fog, maybe the darkness, maybe something else... Either way, we were lost. I kept looking behind me. I was having that feeling where you think something is watching or stalking you. I nearly tripped over Xevphera when she fell.
Help Xevphera up?
