Description
A surprise"A synth?" He asked, looking at the new being that stood in the middle of the marble room. "Do we really need one?" He turned to the others.
"It was a surprise!" Lalna smiled. "Besides, it's a new building, new project... so we need a bit of a hand around the place."
He spaceman looked to the dwarf.
"It was my idea friend..." Honeydew said, giving a small smile.
"It'll be fine Xeph! Trust us. It'll just do some work around the place. Now, me and Honeydew have some stuff to collect from the Jaffa factory... If you want to get acquainted with it." Lalna said.
"Her Lalna, it's a her... I think. Unless we wanna change the gender." Honeydew chuckled and the two left, saying their farewells to the spaceman.
Xephos stood for a moment before turning and looking at the synth. It was quite smaller than him. Fairly tanned with big brown eyes and long straight blonde hair. He could see why the dwarf found it attractive, it was his type.
"Uh... Hi?" He said. The synth looked up at him and a smile appeared on its mouth.
"Hello, my name is -BLANK-. My masters are Honeydew, Lalna and Xephos. Please initiate the recognition procedure." It... She, held her hand forward. He shook it. "Hello Xephos, I am now recognised with your DNA and am able to follow commands you make. You are my leading operator." She smiled again. There was something different about synths eyes. This one had brown eyes, but the centre was bright, artificial. Too vibrant to be naturally made.
"Um... Cool." He gave an awkward smile. "So do you have a set voice and face and body or is there any way to change it? Like a character... Creation... That sounded a lot creepier than I meant it to..." He shook his head. "I'm sorry..."
"It is OK Xephos. As for my functions I am made to serve, to follow instructions given to me by my masters. Xephos, Honeydew and Lalna. Or whoever else may get added to the list of administrators. And I do such jobs under the conditions my masters set, including making them comfortable with being around a machine. i.e, facial features, body type, etc are all part of making you and my other two masters comfortable." She smiled again. The spaceman blinked, taking in the information before nodding slightly.
"Ok... So... In theory, I could... Change you...? If I wanted." He rubbed the back of his head awkwardly.
"Of course Xephos. You may change anything you do not find appealing about me." She looked to the left. "Lalna said I should tidy before they come back, should I continue with my work?" She turned back and smiled at him.
"Uh yes... Of course, if that's OK..." Xephos smiled slightly.
"I am here to serve." She turned and walked over to the mess over in the corner and began tidying it. Her movement, though appearing natural was slightly robotic. Not too realistic.
"You said your name was blank...?" He asked, following her. He was very curious about this being.
"That is correct sir. Masters Honeydew and Lalna have left the title up to you."
"So I can name you whatever I want...?" He began helping to tidy.
"Of course sir." She smiled.
"Can I get back to you on that one...?" He found himself smiling back.
"Of course sir."
They tidied for a little while in silence, the other two would be back in just over an hour or so, it wasn't extremely far to the old factory, but they tended to hang around and slack off a little when he wasn't there. But he knew why they hadn't gotten him to go... He didn't want to go back there.
------------
The factory was a wreck, the walls singed and burnt, and it still felt like smoke hung in the air.
"I forgot how we left this place..." Honeydew said, kicking a piece of rubble.
"It's easy to forget when you've left it alone..." Lalna answered, pulling his jetpack over his shoulders and carefully making his way over to the corner where the shoot was. He looked up the hole, careful not to trip over rubble or anything.
"We had to leave. For Xeph." Honeydew said, doing the same and looking up the shoot. "Let's get going." He set his jetpack up and flew upwards through the shoot and to the other floors. The scientist followed. "So how do you think he's coping?" Honeydew asked as they walked through the third floor.
"You know him better than me." Lalna answered. There was a moment's silence. "I think he's coming to terms with it... After this amount of time I think that's good."
"Good... I don't know I was worried about him at first... He still seems to have that moment..."
"Moment?"
"The moment where he wakes up in the morning... Looking like he's ready to get on with the day... Like she's still gonna be there. And then it kicks in. That she's gone and I have to see that look on his face." He sighed and stopped walking. "You think he'll ever stop...?"
"I'm not sure... It's all part of grief. Same thing happened when my mum died. You wake up expecting them to still be there... And then you remember. And you get to feel that feeling you felt when you first found out about what had happened all over again every morning..." Lalna said. They both stood still for a moment.
"And do you still have that...?" The dwarf asked.
"I was just a kid... It was easy for me to get out of that... Xeph is an adult, and Exza was one of his best friends... It's gonna be a lot harder." The scientist pulled out a scanner and pointed it around the room. "He'll make it through, I have no doubt about that."
"The first few months were scary though... Seeing him like that." Honeydew sighed and pulled out his scanner. "I'm gonna go up to the next floor, see you soon."
------------
"Would you be able to change your hair colour?" Xephos asked, looking at the synths golden hair.
"Of course sir, what colour would you like my hair to be?" She stood and walked over to him.
"Uh... Black?" He gave an awkward smile and the synth smiled back, her hair turning black.
"How is this?" She asked.
"It... It looks nice." The spaceman smiled. "All sorted with this corner?" He turned and looked at the place.
"Yes sir, this corner is clean. Should I start with the sorting of the chests?" She turned and walked to the chests.
"Uh sure, I'll help." He walked with her.
"Would you like to change any other of my attributes sir?" She asked and turned to him.
"Uh... How many eye colours do you have?" He asked, opening one of the chests.
"I can show you my variation of eye colours if you would like."
"Sure." He smiled and turned to her.
Her eyes began to switch from colour to colour pretty quickly, until he spotted a very familiar colour. "Stop! Uh... Please..."
The colour landed on a green.
"Back two...?"
The colour went back over a yellow and to a bright blue. An image flashed through his head of Exza's eyes in front of him and he looked down.
"Uh... Perfect. Thank you." He smiled slightly and turned back to the chest.
"Xeph?" The dwarf came through the door and noticed the spaceman on the platform above them. "Ah, there you are! Having fun?" He smiled and the scientist came in after him carrying some stuff.
"Just sorting out the chests." The spaceman answered, coming down to the dwarf.
"We have a synth for that Xeph." Lalna said.
"I feel bad leaving all the work to her..." The spaceman answered. "Besides I need something to do anyway so..."
"So how you guys getting along then?" Honeydew asked, smiling. The synth came down to meet them. "Ah... I see you edited her a little. To be honest I miss the blonde!" The dwarf smirked.
The synth looked up at him. "Would you like me to change my appearance back to blonde?" She asked. The dwarf frowned, noticing the synths eyes. Exza's colour...
"Uh..." He looked from the synth to the spaceman. "No thank you." He gave a smile.
"Then I shall get back to work sir." The synth turned and went back to the chests.
"I'm only gonna say one thing buddy... She's just a robot..." The dwarf gave a sad nod and went to help the scientist with the objects.
The spaceman gave a confused look before shaking his head slightly and walking over to help.
