Honeydew was waiting at the cafe. He checked his watch as he scratched his red beard, and sighed impatiently. Xephos was always late to their coffee meet ups.
Even though they saw each other often at the museum, they still met up every so often at the cafe, for a coffee and a catch up. The subject didn't really vary too much, mostly about the different places the boy had traveled to, how his studies were going, how the museum was doing in general. The usual stuff.
Still, Honeydew was a fatherly figure to the boy, and always attempted to make sure he was careful in what he was doing. At least he had actually managed to stick to archaeology for the time being. It meant for once he was keeping his mind on one thing. Of course, the adventuring probably helped, every place he went he had new stories to tell.
Still, Honeydew worried. Xephos rarely slept, even less than before, and the bearded man worried that he would also be lacking in his studies due to this.
"Sorry I'm late." A brown satchel bag was placed heavily on the table in front of him as the brunette sat down opposite.
"You always are." Honeydew smiled.
"Been waiting long?"
"No longer than usual. I've already ordered, but I do need a refill so, I'll ask for an extra breakfast as well when the waitress comes over if you want?" Honeydew asked, raising a bushy ginger eyebrow as he sipped the last of his coffee.
"Uhm, no thanks. I had some toast before I came out so." Xephos answered passively. Honeydew shook his head with a smile that said 'I don't believe you', but decided not to act like a controlling parent. He may have been a fatherly figure to him but not actually a blood relative. Xephos smirked back and soon the waitress was walking past.
"I know that look" Honeydew stated as he watched the boy. Xephos had been watching after the waitress as she walked away. "Quite frankly, I wouldn't like to walk in on that again." He added, sipping at his fresh cup of coffee.
"Oh come on that was four years ago." Xephos answered.
"Still didn't want to see it."
"I'll believe that when you delete your search history." Xephos answered cheekily, sipping at his own tea. "I guess its a good thing I have my own place now then isn't it." He smirked. Getting a roll of the eyes back from Honeydew.
------------
A hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, hash browns, a slice of toast with butter, fried mushrooms, sausages, and beans was placed in front of the elder man sitting opposite himself. He raised an eyebrow as Honeydew grabbed the brown sauce, salt and pepper and looked up to him.
"How are your studies going?" He asked, squirting the brown sauce onto the plate.
"Do you really need to ask anymore?" Xephos asked back, giving a sly smirk to the waitress as she poured him another tea and then tottered off to serve some other customers. But not before smiling back at him.
Honeydew snapped his fingers to pull him out of the trance. "You're a bright kid Xeph." He stated, pointing his fork towards him. "Don't waste it."
"I'm not, I just, can't seem to concentrate that's all. My mind always fluttering. I get distracted so easily and recently, it's sorta been getting harder to concentrate on... Anything." Xephos admitted, looking down at his tea and swirling it round in the cup.
Honeydew shot a worried look up at him, taking a bite of his eggs. He chewed them slowly, seeing the boys behavior, trying to tell if what he was saying was true or not. "Have you tried taking those tablets again? The one the doctor wanted you to take in school?" He asked, still keeping an eye on Xephos as he cut into his sausages.
"I stopped taking them years ago. I figured I don't need them anymore. Besides, the tutor for my class says I'm doing just fine. I'm keeping up with the work and the research that I make while at the places I visit makes up for some of the lack of theory work from source images and data collection..." Xephos answered.
"I just don't want you throwing this away like you did with the other classes. University costs good money-"
"I'm not a kid anymore!" Xephos interrupted.
There was a silence that fell over them like an unpleasant smog. Honeydew had stopped what he had been doing with his utensils and Xephos had stopped moving his mug around, and was now looking directly at the elder.
"...I..." Xephos started. Not really knowing how to bring the conversation back to life. "I'm sorry, I... Haven't really been sleeping too well... That's all... I was going to see my doctor after this, just to see if they have anything that will help me sleep." He explained, looking back down again and waiting for a response. After a few seconds he slowly and timidly looked up to his elder, noticing that he had gone back to cutting into his food and was nodding slightly.
"You're right... I apologise. I should stop treating you like you're a child, when I know that you're now an adult. But Xephos." Honeydew said. The boy looked up at him again. "That doesn't mean I'm going to stop trying to help you."
Xephos nodded. "I know..."
"Every time I look at you I see your father. He was my best friend. Just as wild and reckless as you back in the day." Honeydew continued. Xephos was now looking up at him fully, he had always enjoyed hearing Honeydews stories of his father. "And I took it upon myself to try and be the sensible one. And yes, I know most of the time I would be egging him on, but if I knew that he needed help, or that I could try and get him to stick to something or bring his grades up, I helped. You understand...?"
Xephos nodded slightly and looked down at his mug.
"Now, go to your doctors appointment, and I'll see you later a the museum. Ok?" Honeydew said, back to his cheery self.
"Yeah... See you later uncle Honeydew." The kid stood again, pulling his bag over his shoulder and nodding to the man before beginning to walk away.
"Oh and Xeph."
He turned back.
"Don't forget to message me with what the doctor says, alright?"
He nodded and gave a small smile before continuing walking away. As he did so, he 'accidentally' bumped into the waitress. After a few seconds of them talking, Xephos looking endearing and the girl playing with her hair, she handed him a small slip of paper before walking away to a different table. Honeydew noticed the smirk settle onto the boys face as he walked out. He shook his head and smiled down, ready to enjoy his breakfast.
