Description Authors side note -

Hey guys, Exza here. First of all I want to say that if you want any other series of mine to be more common please go to my post about which series you guys wanna see more of and comment on there for your favourite(s).
Now. About this story. This is about the yogs like usual, but darker. This series will mainly be about 4 of the yogs who I havnt decided other than Exza and Xephos so far. (I know I'm not a yog but yeah) and while I usually write Exza in a jolly happy-go-lucky sense I want a darker side to her in this story. Something mysterious that nobodys really seen from her before.
The premise of this story is simple, four rebels on the road. Adventuring, exploring. Always traveling around. Finding random jobs they can, staying in youth hostels, cheap motels and hotels, or stealing provisions and sleeping rough.
I wanted to have a story with some room for character development, you can link this to other stories if you so wish, place it wherever you like on my or someone else's timescale of stories. Could be before or after etc.
Either way, I hope you guys enjoy!

-Exza~ x

"So you've been on the rails your whole life?"
"Rails... Wheels... Anything that can take me places."
"What are you running from?"
"Not from... Towards..."
------------
She shot up into a sitting position. The cabin was dark, the basement illuminated at one side purely with a lantern. She was clad in a black tank top, sweat around it from her dreams, and on her legs were black shorts. She looked to her right. He was still laying there. Asleep.
Scraping her hair back with her hand she stood, looking around as her eyes adjusted to the room. The sleeping bag she had just been in had been warm, whereas in the room wearing nothing but a tank top and shorts the cold settled in just underneath her skin. She shivered and turned, looking into the mirror, seeing her tired reflection. The scraggly black/auburn hair falling at cocky angles atop her head. She undid her ponytail, letting the rest fall down over her shoulders and warm her a bit against the cold Russian air that flowed through the basement. She closed her blue eyes for a moment before looking back at herself.
"You're up early..." A voice came from behind her, and she turned. Spotting her partner. He was in his sleeping bag, propping himself up with his arm and rubbing his eye with his other hand. "Trouble sleeping?" He gave a small smile and she simply sat back down atop her sleeping bag. "Wanna talk about it?" He asked. She blanked him and lay back down. "Right... Night Exza."
"Night Xephos..." She replied and curled up underneath her sleeping bag, wrapping it tight around the collar so she could capture the warmth as best she could.
"Exza...?" Her partner, still half asleep, mumbled.
"Yes Xephos?" She closed her eyes.
"You gonna tell me where were going next?" He asked.
"Perhaps..." She muttered. "Now, get to sleep. You'll need your strength." And with that the room fell to silence. She heard him sigh slightly and move around in his sleeping bag before settling down for sleep. She closed her eyes once again and let herself slip into another dream.
------------
"But where? What are you running to?"
"...freedom..."
"But, you're free?"
"None of us are free... Just because I travel... Doesn't make me free..."
"How will you be free then?"
"...I'll keep running..."
------------
The birds chirped outside in the morning sun, firking their feathers and shivering. She opened her eyes, staring across the room. The light that shone in between the slats in the wall illuminating the room.
"Up." She said as she stood and walked to the set of drawers. "Now."
"Mmmm... I'm up..." Xephos mumbled. She turned abruptly and threw a lamp at him, shattering it on the floor. "Woah! Geez ok I'm up! Seriously? A lamp?" He asked as he stood and kicked his sleeping bag. "Why do we have to be up so early?" He rubbed his eyes as he walked to one of the counters, grabbing two mugs and some crappy hotel hot chocolate.
"Stupid questions will get you nowhere..." She muttered, grabbing her bag and shoving things into it. "The motor train will be on the brink in 2 hours. We need to hike there. And the family is back in half an hour. We can't come back here for another month or so." She stated casually. "And I actually quite like this place... So I would prefer if you didn't get us found out like at that place in India..."
"That wasn't my fault! You said you could handle the guards..." Xephos answered defensively.
"With you doing your job I would have been able to... But you got scared about going to prison..." She sighed and closed her bag, securing it and grabbing her jacket, pulling it over herself and taking in its warmth. "Put the fire on will you?" She asked, pulling up her hood. "Bloody freezing..."
"Eye eye captain..." Xephos said, walking to the fire that was behind them. "Wait, won't they see it if they're heading back?"
He looked up to her but she was putting her finger to her mouth, signaling to shush. He followed her other hand, which was pointing upwards. Dust was falling from the ceiling and the floorboards creaked as a shadow passed over them.
"Grab our shit." She stated, rushing as quietly as she could and yanking the lantern from the wall, blowing it out and attaching it back up. She then went over, grabbing her sleeping bag and quickly rolling it up, watching her partner do the same, and then grabbed her pack and some spare things. She pushed him to the side of the wall, pushing a slat to one side and pushing him from it before slipping through and closing the slat. She stood next to him as he pushed himself up from the snowy ground.
"You're crazy! There's a cliff right there! What if I'd have fallen off?! I could have rolled down there!" He exclaimed.
"Don't fall off then." She replied, grabbing him by the collar and dragging him away from the edge. "Now. Get changed. Unless you want to freeze to death in your pyjamas."
"Fine..." He mumbled and went into his pack, grabbing his clothes and shoving his sleeping bag into it. "Crazy... Absolutely fucking crazy." He mumbled.
She began to take off her pyjamas, pulling on her daytime wear and then putting the hoody back on with the hood half way up as it always was when she wore it. He shook his head slightly and got changed himself while she appeared to be looking for something.
Once he was done he stood and watched her as she picked up a large branch with a bunch of leaves on it, and began to sweep away their footprints.
"Go to the path up there." She said, pushing him slightly. He complied and went up to the concrete path while she followed behind, erasing the footprints. She then threw the stick back next to the cabin for next time, and joined him on the trail.
"This way to the train?" He asked, pointing down the road. She didn't reply, simply started walking in the direction. He sighed and followed, keeping his pace so he could walk next to her. "You know it wouldn't hurt you to smile once in a while..." He stated, watching her as she lit a cigarette.
"I smile." She answered bluntly, holding the packet out to the side and letting him take one.
"Got a light?" He asked. She handed him a Zippo and they continued down the path.
------------
"But if you keep running then you'll run out of places to go?"
"I don't mind..."
"Why not?"
"Because that's when I know my journeys over... No more use in me or it."
------------
"Here, take my hand." He said, holding his hand down the slope and letting her grab it. She yanked on him and he had to readjust his footing, forgetting how strong she was. She placed her foot on the wall of the slope and the other went to the top, lifting her up.
"Thanks." She said and continued walking.
"Don't mention it..." Xephos answered, following. "So how much further? This hiking is making me tired..." He caught up to her and looked out over the top of the ridge they were stood at.
"There's the tracks..." She answered, pointing with black painted nails down at the rails. It was about a mile away. "We still have half an hour. Plenty of time to get there." She stated, and hoped from the ridge, letting herself glide down the snowy embankment and down to a broken down trail. He raised an eyebrow before shrugging and carefully climbing down, slipping near the bottom.
She grabbed his jacket before he could slip and he thanked her.
"I don't see how you do it Exza..." He stated as they continued walking.
"Do what?"
"Just keep your cool. You know slide down slopes and... Know exactly what you're doing all the time."
"I never know what I'm doing Xeph..." She answered, a small side smirk showing. "But nice to know some people have faith in me."
They continued walking until they reached a small outpost type building. It was made of wood, and whoever was supposed to be there seemed to have abandoned a while ago.
"Here." She said, passing him a flask and some bread.
"Thanks." He accepted as they sat down on the step outside the tiny building. "Should we raid the place?" He asked, looking back at the door as he sipped from the flask. The warmth of the hot chocolate filled his body.
"I doubt there's anything in there." She answered, taking the flask from him.
"So, how much further?" He asked.
"Well... This should be the last outpost. So about half a mile." She said, looking off into the distance. "Look." She pointed forward. "Over there..." She whispered. As though being too loud would scare the creature away.
"A deer..." Xephos laughed. "Wow..."
"Have you never seen one before?" She asked, drinking some of the hot chocolate.
"Never..." He breathed.
"We should get going." She stood, taking out her camera and snapping a picture of the far away deer in the snow. "Come on."
He stood and followed.
After about quarter of an hour they had just about made it to the rails. She stopped and he accidentally bumped into the back of her.
"Train..." She mumbled.
She was right, the sound of the clicking along the rails could be heard. And after a couple of seconds it began to shoot past.
"We are not missing this." She stated with determination and sprinted for the train.
"Absolutely fucking crazy!" Xephos yelled behind her but ran so that he wouldn't be left behind.
She ran up to the side, it was going fast, they had missed the stop where they were going to smuggle on. Now they had a time limit. She cursed, looking to Xephos and gripping his wrist, swinging him round and giving him some time in the air to grab the side of the open container. He managed to get inside and turned back to help her.
The bridge was coming up... A sheer drop into the abyss of snow and ice, with just the thin train track over the top... No room for error. She looked back to Xephos, who was holding his hand out. She didn't have long. Her speed was faltering as the cold air filled her lungs, but she pushed herself forward, leaping up.
Her partner had little time but managed to grab her arm, pulling her.
She got her foot safely on the side of the train just as the ground below her stopped and the drop was visible.
Letting out a sigh of relief she slumped down into the corner.
"That was so close!" Xephos breathed, resting his hands on his knees. "Oh my god! That was so close..." He flopped down across from her.
"We made it." She mumbled, looking around the cabin. "It's metal but there's the means in here to make a campfire without burning through anything... Pass me those over there." She said, standing.
"Jeez all business with you isn't it..." Xephos said, standing and handing her what she had asked for.
After a couple of hours she had set up a campfire and they both sat there, either side, curled up in blankets. It was dark outside now, the orange glow of the fire illuminating their faces. And she stared at the flames. Calming... Relaxing.
------------
"Don't you think there's more to life than just running...?"
"...no."
