Description
Honeydew fiddled with his gloves, he was sat outside of the dwarven hall of governors chamber. This was where all the big decisions were made. And Honeydew... Well he may have made a request. He didn't feel like dwarves should be kept underground never seeing the world or... The other planets. Though technically the moon was a form of satellite to Tektopia, he was a simple dwarf, so didn't really know the difference. He looked up as a blonde bearded dwarf came from the room, holding a clipboard. "Mr Honeydew?" She asked, looking up at him over rimmed glasses. He nodded and stood.
"Y-yeah." He said.
"They're ready to see you now. You're lucky that they've accepted seeing you. Usually takes months." She said, before taking him through some kind of secretary style roomhole. The ginger dwarf followed and looked at the door she stood next to, waiting for him to go through. He took a deep breathe of air and then walked through.
The room was a basin of lava, a cobblestone path leading down the center with a circular platform in the middle. Around the outside sat the five dwarven governors. He slowly and timidly walked into the centre of the room, the heat from the lava warming his dwarven skin.
"Honeydew. You stand before us on the account of 'wanting to leave and see the world'?" One of them asked.
"Y-yes sir. Well, not specifically this world..." Honeydew answered, stumbling over his words.
"What could that possibly mean?" Another asked, patronising and scary.
"Well... You see, I love being here in Khaz Modahn, but... I want to go to the moon!" He stuttered.
"The moon?!" One of them asked. There was a moment of silence when Honeydew nodded, followed by laughter. They were laughing at him.
"I just think we spend too much time down here! Have you ever looked up at the sky? Seen the moon and thought about how much you want to go?" He asked.
One of them laughed more. "You'd fail if you tried." He said, his tone mocking and mean.
"B...but-"
"Stop wasting our time." Another said. "Here is your pick, get back to digging up mithril." Another spoke.
Honeydew looked up at all of them, before reluctantly reaching for the pick. But he stopped. Retracting his gloved hand and simply looked at them. He turned and began walking out.
"Mr Honeydew." The boss of the governors, who hadn't spoken yet, called.
He didn't turn. He just stopped.
"You are making a big mistake. If you leave this room without your pick you will be banned from mining for 2 months. And will be bound to your bedhole."
Honeydew didn't answer, he simply continued walking.
------------
"Thanks buddy..." Honeydew sighed, taking the plate of bread his mole friend had bought round to him through the tunnel under his bed. Beets sat next to him on the bed and he petted him as he ate the bread. "Remember the plan?"
The mole nodded. "Ok, I'll see you later yeah?" He gave him a quick last pat on the head and watched him dig away. He sighed, laying back on his bed and putting his arms under his head. "Now to wait..." He sighed, an excited feeling settling in his stomach.
------------
He awoke to the sound of digging from below him, sitting up he saw his mole friend.
"Hey Beets... All clear?" He asked. The mole nodded. "Right... Well, I guess this is it buddy. I won't be allowed back if I do this..." He sighed. "But its worth it... I never felt like I fit in here very much anyway." He stood, grabbing his bandolier, his shoes and his helmet, putting them on and then strapping his pick holder to the back of his bandolier. He nodded to his mole friend, patting him on the head. "See ya later buddy..." He gave a sad smile. "I won't say goodbye... I'll see you again." He stood back up, walking to the door and watching his mole friend dig away. He sighed and opened the door.
Peering out, he didn't see anyone around. He made his way down the tunnels, relying on his eyesight to see where he was going. One wrong step and he'd fall down the mines to his doom. He turned right, into the pick holders. He snook around, looking for the ladydwarf who usually stood guard. But it appeared at night time nobody thought about guarding things. He crept in, looking for his pick. It was in his place. He smiled and picked it up, his trusted iron pick. He would have to upgrade it at some point, maybe diamond... But for now, it was good enough for him. He slid it into his holster, and snook back out of the room.
Once he was done, he went a couple more floors down, where the mines were, and stood on the corner where it split off into different paths. He looked around. After a couple of minutes he turned and saw the light from Jefin's lantern. Clearly the little dwarf didn't have as good eyesight as he did in the dark. It was a good thing nobody was around...
He smiled. "Hey Jefin."
"Hi Honeydew." The little dwarf smiled. "Here..." He pulled up a cloth pack, like the kind he would eat his lunch from. He smiled and took the pack.
"Thank you friend." He looked up at the top of the deep mine they were in, and up above he could see the stars.
"Are you sure about this Honeydew...?" Jefin asked.
The moon came into view... And he smiled. "I'm sure." He looked down at his friend. "Don't cry mate." He patted him on the head. "You don't need me."
"You were my first friend Honeydew... Only other dwarf who believed in me..." The little dwarf whimpered.
"Don't worry, you'll be just fine. Trust me, you're the brains of this place, think of the changes you could make here. One day, you could be on the council." He smiled. "Now, no more tears, I need to get going, now, go back to your room before they do the rounds." They smiled at each other, and the smaller dwarf hugged the others legs.
"I'll miss you Honeydew..." He spoke.
"I'll miss you too mate." He smiled. "Hopefully I'll see you again one day." And with that he turned and began walking. He looked back, seeing the tiny dwarf scurry back towards his room. He smiled sadly and turned, walking back up the mines. He made his way towards his room again, grabbing his books, his little doggy toy and his plant, putting them into the pack and then walking out. He looked around, seeing torches dotted around... They were doing the rounds. He turned and made his way up the tunnels, towards the earth above. He hurried, hearing the talking of the guards behind him. He hurried, going faster and then climbing the rest of the way up, hearing the guards down below. He ignored them, climbing all the way to the top. Once he got there, he sighed, laying back on the floor. His hands were sore from the climbing.
"Well..." He said to himself. "I've left that home... And that life behind." He sighed and stood, looking around. The men he had seen before weren't there at the moment. He sighed, he needed rest. The dwarf made his way over to a tree, curling up underneath it. "I got a new life now I guess..." He smiled. Something about this felt right.
