Part one
"I mean he hardly spoke in the last recording of whale lords- thank you." Simon said as he and Mark got their drinks from the till.
Cutting off the text to show Simon is talking to more than one character or interrupting himself, this sets it up to be more like a film, which helps the audience visually imagine the story as if it is a film or TV show.
"And almost everyone even asked if he was ok. He doesn't usually let anything effect a recording." They walked to the door and out into the street. "We're just all worried about him."
Noticing differences in your friends, especially when recording for an audience.
"Well I can see where you're coming from, he hasn't asked me to do a lot recently. I mean he hardly ever leaves his room when everyone else is around." Mark answered, sipping his drink.
"He won't even let me talk to him anymore unless its through a recording, and he knows I can't ask him what's wrong in front of the audience." Simon said.
They continued their conversation, making their way towards Yogtowers. Not noticing the black figure that loomed in the alleyway next to the coffee shop, watching them.
Setting up the fact that Dark ahs access to all of them, not just Lewis, setting up his threats to be more real and intimidating.
------------
His door was locked again. Paul noticed as he walked past his bosses door. He shook his head slightly and went into his room, he didn't feel like getting shouted at again.
Setting up where the story left off while also showing once again how everyone is worried and don't know what to do. It also shows how much Lewis is isolating himself, which is probably what Dark wants. It also probably has the audience annoyed that Lewis isn't asking for help, but think about it, would you? If you knew your friends were in danger? This sets up how Lewis is a good character, despite being mean or harsh recently.
Xephos - send it me then.
Dark - don't get bossy. Or I might just have to attack some of your friends.
Another nod towards future parts of how Dark really doesn't like the jokes.
Xephos - don't. I'm doing what you tell me here. Just send me the file.
Dark - its already downloading.
Lewis blinked at the words, and then alt tab-bed out of his minecraft screen. On his desktop was a folder, where different files were being downloaded into. He went back to minecraft.
Including nerd talk or references to computer skills. 'Alt-tabbed' etc., while a lot of people wont understand it, the fans of the yogscast probably would, which helps make the audience feel more relaxed and included into the story.
Xephos - I won't ask how you're doing that...
Dark - no. You shouldn't. You let me worry about that sort of stuff. Don't worry, there's no viruses.
Xephos - what a relief.
Dark - are we getting sarcastic again?
Another nodddd~
-honeydew joined the game-
Xephos - no.
Honeydew - lewis? Who you talking to?
Xephos - no one.
-Sjin joined the game-
Sjin - hey guys, what's going on?
Honeydew - getting ready to record the next session
Ignoring the strange behaviour this time despite being worried, knowing it would just send Lewis over the edge again.
{Dark (whispers) - don't forget the files Lewis. I'll speak to you later.}
Once again using the whisper feature so that the others don't know, and that way Lewis cant reply but can still be annoyed by Dark. A taunting bad guy isn't a new thing, one with a sense of humour while still being creepy and mysterious is fairly difficult to find. Similar to Pennywise the clown or people who aren't actually a bad guy. Basically setting up depth for this character even though we don't know hardly anything about him. I expect by now people also have an image of him in their head, without any information.
Xephos - should we get going then.
Honeydew - Duncan and sips aren't here yet man
-Sips_ joined the game-
Sips_ - what's up motherfuckers
Character continuity once again.
Sjin - speak of the devil
Xephos - so were just waiting on Duncan then
Honeydew - pretty much...
There was a moments silence.
Honeydew - so you feeling any better lewis?
Xephos - I'm fine Simon. Can you just stop asking me that.
Honeydew - just checking...
Asking but still not pushing when given the same answer again, respecting boundaries.
The silence returned. At this point Paul got on his phone and text Duncan to hurry up.
Feeling awkward for the win!
Sjin - I've just text him, maybe we should get onto mumble?
Including another tech reference that fans will probably get, also research or memory of the tech the group use.
Simon - good idea
They all went onto mumble, and said their hellos. Everyone except Lewis.
"Lewis?" Simon asked, no response. He checked the mumble server.
"Yeah he's not online simon." Sjin said.
He was right, Simon checked the server list and saw that lewis was still not online.
Honeydew - lewis? You coming onto mumble?
Xephos - I will.
Sips_ - when?
Xephos - when I want to sips.
Sjin - don't get so defensive lewis, he was just asking
Sticking up for your friends
"What's his problem?" Paul asked over mumble. Everyone began to moan and sigh.
"Just ignore him..." Simon said.
Xephos - don't start this all again. We need to record and if you all piss me off then that's not gonna happen.
Honeydew - woah... Lewis chill. We're only havng a laugh, just come onto mumble.
Defusing the situation before it escalates, once again showing another character. Simon wants to help but is holding back and defusing a lot of things because he does not want conflict, he just wants to help.
Simon watched the server list and the little red circle that was next to Lewis' name. It turned green, he was online. He didn't say anything, but he was definitely online.
"Lewis?" Simon asked.
A static noise came through the speakers on his headphones and he suddenly heard a shout.
Small thrill of excitement for the kick in the story.
------------
"Ah!" Lewis said, jumping up from his seat and throwing his headphones onto the desk. They had made a screeching noise in his ears. "Fuck..."
He heard a knock on his door. "Lewis? You ok buddy?" Simons voice came.
Immediately coming to your friends rescue, did I mention Simon is always a win?
"Yeah... I'm fine." Lewis answered.
"What happened?"
"Headphones are faulty. I have some others. Just leave me to it." Lewis said.
Simon sighed and went back to his room.
"What happened?" Paul asked.
"Something to do with his headphones, he's getting some others. Is Duncan here yet?" Simon responded.
"Not yet." Chris answered.
-Angor joined the game-
Honeydew - tom? What are you doing online?
Angor - lewis just came upstairs to get some headphones and was acting pretty weird.
Sjin - how so?
Angor - is he still online?
Sips_ - yeah, he'll c this.
Angor - well, basically he came upstairs and walkd straight past everyone without saying anything
Angor - and then he got annoyd when some of the headphones were tangled together, and then he slammed them down once he'd gotten a pair.
The worry is expanding through the office, more and more people are noticing as time goes on.
Honeydew - we don't know what's up with him at the moment...
Sips_ - I think we should just put a bunch of random crap in the chat so that he can't see we were talking about him?
Sjin - oh yeah gd idea sips
Teenage behaviour really, but what more is expected from Sips and Sjin?
They typed random stuff into the chat, making it look like a normal conversation, and then Lewis was back on mumble.
Organising text to not make your friend upset. The teamwork between these characters is set up quite a bit in this series, and shows that they're not just friends for work but IRL as well.
"Lewis?" Simon asked.
"Is Duncan here yet?" The raven haired mans voice came back.
"Not yet mate." Simon answered.
{Dark (whispers) - lewis~}
He ignored him because of everyone else.
{Dark (whispers) - Lllllewis~ don't ignore me. You really don't want to ignore me.}
Knowing he's annoyed Dark jokes around, using the humour I mentioned before while still making it creepy. Lewis also knows he can't answer but is still worried of what will happen, hence why he's actually paying attention to the dude.
He didn't exactly have a choice at this point.
Then he heard it, a sigh, through his headphones. And it wasn't one of his friends. He figured the others hadn't heard it, as they got on with their conversation.
Showing a slight bit of how much power Dark ahs without giving away too much, for most people this would be a passing detail, setting up for the bigger things that happen towards the end of this chapter. Also connecting the pieces between the control Dark ahs had, not only over Lewis and making him isolated, but also his technology, he's copied over files to his computer, and also managed to invade their group talk through Mumble, despite nobody else being able to hear it.
{Dark (whispers) - xephossss~}
Lewis was getting frustrated. He couldn't answer in front of his friends.
{Dark (whispers) - lewis.}
Finally getting fed up of being nice and funny and suddenly turning 'dark' and serious.
Xephos - WHAT?!
There was a moment where everything went quiet.
"Lewis? Who you talking to?" Simon asked, worried that he'd seen the conversation from before or something.
"Wrong tab..." Lewis mumbled.
Coming up with excuses on the fly.
"Alright..." Simon answered, not fully convinced.
Apparently not good enough lying, or just knowing your friends! We need to remember that Lewis and Simon have been friends for years, and while it was a good split second excuse, Simon knows him better.
{Dark (whispers) - temper temper. Check your files~}
Dark immediately going back to fun now that Lewis has answered and raised the suspicion of the others. Dark is clearly someone who would like to have some fun with his victim. While that's a dick move, he IS a bad guy, and he seems almost droll and bored throughout the early appearances of him, almost juxtaposing Lewis.
Lewis raised an eyebrow and opened the folder of files he'd been sent. Most of the files were locked for some reason, but one wasn't. He sighed and opened it, looking at the picture once it had loaded. It was in minecraft chat... With Angor? He read through what his friends were talking about. Him.
He sighed and closed the picture. Going back onto minecraft.
"Is Duncan here." He demanded.
"Yeah he's setting up now." Paul answered.
"Tell him to hurry up." Lewis said, moving Xephos around in minecraft.
Being angry while still not accusing the others of what they did. Either not sure if Dark messed around with the chat or still trying to protect the friends who have been talking about you behind your back. We also see Lewis' character ticks begin to come into paly as eh moves around his character in game, like he does when he is attempting to talk or is stressed on recordings.
"A-alright..." Paul said, and Lewis heard him get up and walk past his own door towards Duncan's.
Lewis looked back in the folder to see that all the files were locked. He raised an eyebrow and closed the folder again. He looked at his screen, it was pure black. He was on the minecraft tab, but it was pure black. He leant forward, noticing a tiny white light in the middle of the screen. He noticed it getting closer, and pulled a confused look to no one in particular. He took off his headphones and continued to look at this dot as it got bigger and turned into two dots.
Sudden set up of how powerful Dark is.
As he finally realised that it was two eyes, he had to jump back. The blackness bounced from his screen, rising up and then sinking back into the screen, turning to an 8-bit style, a small speech bubble popping up saying 'ha ha' and the sound of 8-bit deep laughing came from the headphones on his desk.
Messing with your prey? This actually shows how much control Dark has while still not explaining hardly anything about his character. We see how many different things he can manipulate, from virtual to real world as the entire screen either disappears to let the blackness out, or bendig the screen to accommodate the darkness. Either way, Dark ahs some mad powers, and Lewis had probably seen them before showing why eh is doing what Dark says and why he is isolating himself.
While this trope can be seen as similar to Harry Potter when Luna states 'if I was you-know-who, I'd want you to feel isolated', but it is a true point when relating to bad guys, usually they have been isolated themselves, and thus know what makes people crack. Also the link between the trope 'you-know-who' or 'he-who-shall-not-be-named', we have a similar thing with Dark, we don't know his real name and that give shim more power.
He gave himself a moment to breathe before his screen turned back to minecraft and he noticed that Xephos had died. From falling?
"Did... Did someone push me off?" He asked.
"Mate what happened?! We were just stood here letting Duncan get ready and then suddenly your character started freaking out and flailing and punching around and then you sorta... I don't know you kinda turned like blue and black colours like when you edit a picture to be like opposite or something... And then you were like thrown back off the side of the whale!" Simons voice came, along with a few mutters from the others.
While it would be easier to describe by using the correct terminology, we need to remember Simon is the one talking and may not know - or remember given the situation - the correct name for what he is talking about. He could also be too freaked out and speaking too fast to have time to focus ont hat. As long as eh gets his point across.
Also linking creepy pasta (ben drowned) into the creepy side, showing not very common horror tropes while also making it somewhat different so as to not fully copy.
"Yeah what happened silk shirt, It was totally freaky!" Chris' voice came through.
Sticking with nicknames win, despite being in a confusing or bad situation! Sips is always a win.
"I don't know I was tabbed out. Probably a glitch..." Lewis said, looking back into the folder to see a note that was unlocked.
He opened it.
The idea of this file system having a mind of it's own as Dark controls it is a good way to again nudge the audience to see how powerful Dark is, and is also a strange different way to give information to the main character and protagonist.
'Don't worry, I won't get you that easy. Just wanted to strike a little fear through you.
Your next task is simple, unlock the rest of this folder and go through the files.
And Lewis. Don't try and get help, if you do that person will be hurt.
Kind regards~
Dark.'
Still as modest and charming as ever? Well, it does play somewhat to the trope of 'British posh guy is the villain', while we don't know what Dark sounds like, I'm sure a lot of the audience has the voice and I guarantee its well articulated or British. Also finally showing how much control Dark has over Lewis. Also considering Dark was slightly based on Ultron from the Avengers, it adds more to the character, because of the sarcastic, humour filled character. And that being all we know about him.
"Nothing to worry about..." He finished off. "Everything's fine..."
Connections to Yoglabs! Always a win, despite whether the audience noticed or not. We all know how connected Lewis is to his character, so this is a little nod in that direction, despite Xephos from Yoglabs being 'evil' we can see how the parallels could work, especially when following the author (me) and her description of WHY Xephos is 'evil' in Yoglabs.
"Right so are we ready to record?" Duncan's voice came through.
Accepting what your friend says despite their strange behaviour.
"Yep!" Everyone said back. And Lewis still stared at the note, before it disappeared from his screen, and left him staring at his minecraft character. But instead of the blocky pixel face looking at him, it was a realistic face, like Xephos had come to life.
Another nod to how much Lewis loves Xephos, also changing realities even fi it's only for one person. Again signifying how powerful Dark is, and we STILL know nothing about him! Setting up more questions for the future.
He blinked, and the image turned into his reflection. Like he was Xephos.
Because he... is... Xephos? Get it? Idk, either way, changing reality to mess with your opponent, a great tactic for war, interigastion, or breaking someones mind. We can assume Dark is evil purely based on what he is doing to Lewis.
And then, after another blink, everything was back to normal. And everyone was getting on with the recording session...
