"What happened to your arm, ______?" Yugi asked, knocking me from my train of thought. It was lunch, we were all sat around a lunch table at school. I'd been resting my head in my hand staring down at my food.I looked down to my arm, noticing a long red cut along it. "Oh..."
'Must be from yesterday...' I thought, remembering when Bakura had pulled me into the storage room, must have cut my arm on the door.
"Must have scratched it on something." I mumbled.
"Well I have some bandages if you need them! It is bleeding slightly..." Ryou noticed, holding some bandages up from his bag.
He was right, it was trickling blood down my arm, must have opened it up somehow... I thanked him and bandaged it up, handing him back the roll as another person walked over.
He was tanned, with platinum blonde hair and violet coloured eyes. He smiled at the group. "Hey guys!" He called cheerily, sitting down.
"Hey Marik! ______, this is Marik Ishtar." T`ea said, smiling. The new guy nodded to me and I smiled.
"How was your holiday Marik?" Yugi asked.
"Same old, same old. Going back to Egypt isn't exactly a holiday for me." He smiled.
"Marik also has a counter, called Malik. He's from Egypt, and has one of the millennium items." Ryou informed me. I nodded slightly, catching Marik shooting me a smile from the corner of my eye. He seems nice enough. Hopefully his counter wasn't as bad as Bakura...
------------
We sat down in class, the first thing I noticed was that Bakura wasn't there. He hadn't been all day... I chose to ignore the bad feeling I held, and got on with my work. Half way through the lesson Marik came over and sat next to me, having been sat at the teachers desk before.
"Mind if I sit here? Seen as Bakura isn't here?" He asked, smiling. I nodded and he sat down. "______, was it?" He asked, holding out a hand. I shook it, nodding. "Nice name." He said, smiling before getting on with his work. We spoke throughout the lesson, he explained to me that him and his counter got on quite a bit better than Ryou did with his. Though Bakura and Malik was a different issue. They would constantly fight even though they were pretty good friends.
"I wish they wouldn't drink or smoke though..." Marik admitted, but shrugged. "It's their choice if they want to though."
Bakura smoked? Hmm...
"What's Bakura's problem...?" I found myself asking. Marik smiled a little.
"He's got a grudge against the world. Before, all spirits were trapped within us. Malik was a part of me, Yami was a part of Yugi, Bakura was a part of Ryou... But something happened and we are now separate people. Ryou is the kind side of Bakura, whereas Yami - the darker Bakura - is the evil spirit that resided in the ring. Same with the rest of us with millennium items." Marik explained. I nodded, I understood... Slighty. The blonde boy smiled at me. "Either way, he's just a softy really, he puts up a good front but if you're in trouble he'll be there."
I thought of the night before... He had been there for me against those bullies. For all I knew... He'd taken a knife hit for me.
"Have you seen Bakura today?" I asked. Marik shook his head.
"Nope. I spotted him walking home yesterday, seemed distracted. Almost day dreaming. He didn't even notice me. But I havnt seen him today." Marik answered, getting on with work. "Hey can I borrow your scissors?"
I nodded and handed him my scissors. So he was OK after that night... Good. I didn't know why I cared so much, he hadn't been the kindest person to me in the past week... But I was glad he was OK. Still... Why hadn't he come to school that day?
At the end of the lesson we got given our groups for the next assignment.
I opened up the piece of paper the teacher had given me, along with the rest of the class.
"Now, I've tried to pair you up with people you wouldn't usually work with. Each of you will have strengths and weaknesses. But I hope you can work together." The teacher said, dismissing us. Most people had left the room and I walked over to the others.
"Hey ______, who's you get in your team?" Yugi asked.
I looked down at the bit of paper.
'Ryou,
Yami,
Bakura'
I groaned internally and showed them the paper.
"Well, at least we didn't get stuck with Joey again!" Ryou smiled.
"What's at supposed to mean?" Joey asked, clenching his fist.
"It means you slack off all the time and don't do any of the work." Tristan interrupted.
"Who are you guys with?" I asked.
"I'm with T`ea, Tristan and Marik." Yugi smiled.
"I got Malik, a random other guy and Duke." Joey said.
"Oh yeah Duke gets back tomorrow doesn't he?" T`ea asked.
"Who's Duke...?" I asked.
"Oh, Duke Devlin! He invented a dice based dueling game. He's a bit of a womaniser... So watch out when he is back." Yugi laughed.
"Fun..." I mumbled.
After hanging around after school for a little while and playing some games, we decided to head home. Me, Yami and Ryou agreed to go to mine tomorrow - a Friday - after school, so that we could work on the project. Ryou said he'd drop in on Bakura on the way home and let him know. Yami also made a group chat on messenger so we could say if we'd be late or had any ideas or anything.
We said our goodbyes and headed home. When I got there I walked inside, greetings my dad... Even though I knew he wouldn't be there to answer... And then made my way to the kitchen to make myself a drink. I sneezed rather loudly and sniffled, hoping I didn't get a cold from standing on the roof in the rain yesterday, and then having to walk home... I sighed and made myself a drink, walking into the lounge and sitting on the sofa. I felt worn out, exhausted. And I have this feeling in my head, like I usually got when I was getting sick. Great...
I pulled my blanket from the back of the sofa and pulled it around my shoudlers, sipping at my drink and watching TV. I started to cough and sighed.
"Great I really am getting ill..." I mumbled, rubbing my head. "I'll still be able to go to school... It'll be fine..." I sighed again and continued watching TV, but soon felt sick and had to rush to the toilet to throw up.
Maybe going to school tomorrow would be a bad idea...
I messaged the group saying not come come over tomorrow after school because I was ill and then put my phone down, feeling run down and weak.
After a little while I checked the group, seeing some messages.
Ryou - aww, everything OK ______?
Yami - If you need rest then don't come in. It will only make you worse.
No reply from Bakura. I didn't expect it anyway... Everyone had such different personalities. Yami was still trying to be kind, but he was stern about it. Almost commanding me to get better. Whereas Ryou was concerned, asking if I was OK. It was strange.
I decided to reply.
______ - I'm OK... Just feeling under the weather. I won't be in school tomorrow if I still feel like this tomorrow. Must have been the rain yesterday.
I sighed and placed my phone down. It was only 9:30 at night but I felt so tired. My eyes began to drop and I fell asleep on the sofa, not even making it to my bed.
------------
I woke up the next day and looked around. I was still on the sofa, curled up under my blanket. I quickly switched the TV off and looked at the clock on my mantel.
4:50 PM
I'd slept for that long?! I guess it was well needed... After all I never slept well. But now I was awake I felt terrible. My nose was blocked, my head was all stuffy and my throat was raw. I could hear a knocking and looked to my door. Was it my dad's friend? He said he would check in every so often...
I coughed and told them to come in, standing up and rubbing my head.
I heard the door open and close and footsteps coming closer. Turning, I wasn't greeted by my dad's friend. Instead, it was Bakura. Looking as annoyed as usual.
He leant against my wall, folding his arms, raising an eyebrow at my confused look.
"B-Bakura..." I mumbled, my voice going. "What are you doing here...? I told everyone not to come today..." I said, my voice cracking. I felt a little uncomfortable about him being in my flat.
He stood up straight. "You shouldn't be talking if you're ill. From the sounds of it, you're already losing your voice." He spoke, softly. More kind than usual. He came over around the couch, picking up my mug from the night before and pointing across the open plan apartment. "Your kitchen I assume?" He asked. His face seemed kinder, he wasn't glaring at me like usual... I nodded, heeding his warning about not talking. I watched him walk into the kitchen and wash the mug before putting it on the drying wrack and he pulled a clean mug from the cupboard. "I want to apologise for making you walk home in the rain yesterday. I should have given you my jacket." He spoke, pulling some honey from the cupboard and some lemon juice from the fridge.
"T...that's ok. I have a pretty bad imune system... So..." I mumbled, watching him flick the kettle on. He turned to look at me, and I only just noticed the red stain on his white shirt. He was in his school uniform. "Um... I'm sorry about not being able to work on the project today..." I added, attempting to make conversation.
"We have until next week, like the Pharoe said, if you need rest. You need rest." He seemed to say Pharoe with a slight edge to his voice. I knew he and Yami didn't get along too well, despite both being spirits and having the same first name... I guess there was a lot I needed to learn about my friends still.
"Uh... Why... Why are you here Bakura?" I asked. He mixed the hot water with the lemon and honey and added a spoonful of sugar before mixing it with a little cold water and bringing it over.
"I was worried." He stated, motioning for me to sit down. I sat back down on the sofa and he sat in the single chair next to it. Worried... About me? The person he spent all his time glaring at...?
"Why...?"
"Here drink this." He spoke softly, handing me the mug. I sipped a bit of it, honey and lemon was good for saw throats after all. "Good. TV?" He asked, picking up the remote. I nodded slightly, placing the mug down. This was so weird... He'd never been to my place before, never properly spoken to me until two days ago, and yet here he was, sat down with me in my apartment watching TV and caring for me while I was ill. It was safe to say I didn't understand this guy. At all.
He came over and picked the blanket up, before trowing it over the back of the sofa.
"No wonder your throats so sore. This blanket is so thin." He mumbled. He hesitated for a moment. "Here." He began pulling off his blue overjacket and placed it around my shoulders.
I blinked at him. "Uh... You don't have to do this..." I whispered.
I noticed his mouth tugging at the sides into a smirk. "Well it's pretty obvious you can't take care of yourself." He chuckled darkly.
"I can!" I answered, perhaps a little too defensively.
He raised an eyebrow slightly and smirked. "Ok. I'll be back soon." He said, standing up.
"Where are you going...?" I asked. I didn't know why he was here in the first place but I didn't want him to leave now.
"Don't worry. I'll be back soon. I know that you came from Egypt last, so I assume all of your clothes are thin and short. Seen as it's cold you'll need some warmer ones." He looked at me from over his shoulder. There was a moment of silence before he turned and walked out.
I blinked a few times before shaking my head slighty.
Bakura... Why did he have to be so confusing...?
