Description
Maine wasn't one to pay attention to things unless they were staring at him straight in the face. But he did care about the small details people seemed to miss. Sure, he was a tough guy, but he had grown up with some manners.News had gotten around about the new agent that the Director had seemly slipped into the Freelancer program. Everyone knew. Connie had been skeptical as usual, York trying to see if he could romance up another girl Freelancer, South not even giving the new agent the time of day, North and Wash giving warm hello's, Carolina and Tex giving their "I'm number one" speeches, ....he had seen it all. Nothing was different than the norm so he didn't pay the new agent any mind.
Him, York and Wash had been called into training again. Wyoming had snickered calling back at them, "Don't get too slap happy in there, mates." Maine had uttered a 'bitch please', rolling his eyes. Wash was fidgeting with his helmet again and York had just laughed at the statement. Almost running into the new agent, he only caught a glimmer of what the new blue agent looked like under the helmet. Two seconds later he was coughing, Wash asking him if he needed a cough drop.
"No. Just...something in the air."
Wash nodded and slipped his helmet on.
It was the first time in nights he had dreamed about his family in a long time. His dad reading the newspaper, mom working on dinner and replying to mail, and his brother....
He woke up with a start, a small amount of sweat dripping down his forehead. Quickly removing himself from the room, he tried not to wake up Wash in the bed other the other side of him. David was always the one getting nightmares, not him. What was going on? Stress, he thought, it's all the stress. I should...go blow off some steam.
He wasn't the only one up at this hour. Immediately recognizing the blue pads resting on the bench in the locker room, he rushed over to where the punching bags were. There the new agent was, sitting with his laptop. The agent looked up at him. It was about 5 minutes before Maine found himself next to the new agent, pulling him into a tight hug.
"I missed you." It was all the blue agent had ever said to him. And it was all Maine needed to hear. The agent ruffled the taller agents hair smiling a little.
"Blowing off steam like you always do?"
He grunted in reply, standing up and giving one of the rustic red punching bags a small tap.
"Looks like you and 479er are buddies." He swung a pair of boxing gloves over his shoulder. The smaller agent laughed.
"I supply the ammunition and she flies the plane. What else is there?"
Maine grinned. "Well....considering how she flies...."
The smaller agent laughed again. He was only a foot shorter than Maine but taller than 479er when he stood up. His some-what short light brown hair and greenish-brown eyes seemed to actually be alive for once.
"Oh and by the way, Maine , I didn't really have a choice in the armor color."
"You know everyone calls you Smurfy right?," he gave a firm punch to the bag letting it swing before promptly punching it again.
The smaller agent chuckled. "So that's what they're saying eh? It's hard to pull of the silent-by-deadly type. I should know. I kind of learned it from you, big guy." He gently punched the taller agents shoulder, smiling up at him. The taller agent smiled back at him.
"I missed you a lot."
"I missed you too, buddy."
