Description
The White Countess is a 2005 Merchant Ivory film starring Ralph Fiennes, Natasha Richardson, and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film is a wonderful period piece, set in 1930's Shanghai, and portraying the lives of several displaced people who find each other just prior to the start of war. The screenplay was written by Kazuo Ishiguro, the author of Remains of the Day. Mr. Sanada is Mr. Matsuda, a Japanese businessman who meets and befriends Ralph Fiennes character, Todd Jackson, a former diplomat who lost his sight and family tragically. The movie has a somewhat slow pace, but smoulders all the way through, and I felt that the payoff was worth it. The film beautifully captures a time, place, and aesthetic that is just beautiful.
