The Tunnel Drilling machine (TDM) was a prototype machine made for one purpose; to drill tunnels for better traffic control. It used a steam engine which powered the drill head via a gearbox. Using a system of hydraulics and gears, the machine could extend and shrink in size, similar to a caterpillar. The machine was built by Switzerland and was funded by the LLEL. It would later be the inspiration for the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) that was built to dig the Gottard Tunnel. Due to it's immense size, it could onlt be transported by rail using special bogies as it was too heavy for any truck to move (and too big to fit on any trailer.)
