Description
there's a reason why recovered alcholoicsnever drink again.
and a reason why ex-smokers
still long a for light
when they smell those peppery plumes.
you were a habit.
and habits die hard.
you were a longing.
you were a lust.
you were a lifestyle.
you caught me with words
and drug me, willing,
into your trap.
you were everything
an addiction should be.
there should have been a patch.
I was desperate
and couldn't help myself
but come crawling
to your house every night
and I couldn't help
but for more.
you were a habit.
then slowly my doses
started to shrink.
slowly, how tragically,
you began to fade.
I was goig insane
with the thought
that I might lose you.
time was running short
and I had to have more.
but everyone knows
that it's always the drug
that's in control.
and you were no longer addicted.
so I quit cold-turkey
because you had cold feet.
it wasn't my choice,
after all,
you were the habit.
I writhed in my anguish
and longing for you
for weeks.
you were too much
in my system.
but I managed.
I coped.
I eventually pulled through
and I found something,
someone new.
no, not an addiction.
nor even a a habit.
he's a vacation,
recreation,
a new start
for the little and lost
Sarah Jane.
and the days come and go,
but some are so slow
that my favorite distraction
will notice my lingering pain.
but he won't avoid it
or cover it up
with some fake sugary
lies.
no, he'll wrestle it from me
and make sure I know
that that time has long
passed me by.
he's my protector
my love and my friend
and he understands
why sometimes I must stop
when a lingering scent
fills me up
and takes me away.
he knows that I love him,
that I'll always adore him
and that he's not just some passer-by.
so when I stop to remember
and must walk away for a moment,
because the longing has threatened to drown me,
he knows where I am
and that I'll always come back,
even at times when I don't.
because he is the cure,
my protector and love,
to a part of my life that was wasted.
because he is the cure.
and you were only a habit.
