Description
the sun shall grow black and dangerous, and the Fimbul winter shall set in.
So what was the Fenris wolfs role in the Ragnarok ment to be?
And what has he got to do with the sun?
People say that the sun shall go dark of its own accord.
People say that the Fenris wolf shall eat it.
And in other tellings people say nothing of the sun, and only about the wolf it self running amok, and swallowing all, and everything on its way. Gods humans, you name it.
The other thing is, during my research I could find drawing upon drawing, upon painting, and etching, and jewellery, of the wolf swallowing the sun, and not a single verbal explanation of this.
….
Perhaps other than in passing, here in Vafþrúðnismál:
"Much I have travelled, much have I tried out,
much have I tested the Powers;
from where will a sun come into the smooth heaven
when Fenrir has assailed this one?"
And that is the thing.
This is a recipe for misunderstandings.
Odin is not talking about the wolf swallowing the sun here,
But rather the goddes Sol.
Which is pretty much the sun personified.
So what has the wolf done?
Has he swallowed the sun?
Has he swallowed a woman?
If you swallow the sun goddes, one thing is for certain, there will be no sun the next day.
So has the sun gone dark?
Has the sun ended up in the wolfs belly?
It is a philosophical question, isn´t it?
I am sure this made perfect sense back in the viking age.
