Description
First attested in depictions on a cylinder seal from around the 21st century BCE, and recorded in the Babylonian catalogues before 1000 BCE.That is the legacy of the star sign of Capricornus.
It has one of the oldest mythological associations of the entire zodiac, the image of a goat with a fish tail standing firm since the Bronze Age.
The babylonians named it “MULSUḪUR.MAŠ”, the “goat fish”.
A symbol of their god Ea.
Later on it was identified as Amalthea, the goat that suckled infant Zeus, or sometimes as the god Pan.
The stories has changed over time.
Just like with a lot of things.
But the Babylonian fish tail, which really only made sense in the context of Babylonian mythology remained.
A remnant of its ancient history.
Amongst the zodiacs oldest.
Which is interesting when you think about the fact that it is faint of light, and the smallest amongst the 12.
Not to say, of course, that they where specifically looking for a zodiac sign as they charted it down.
It must all have made sense to them, at the time.
