Description
MAMBA MUNTU
At some point, ancient African water snake deities who shape-shifted between the form of a snake and that of a human became better known in a hybrid form and remain popular in this form to this day. The mamba muntu is one of many mermaid spirits in the class of mami wata who hails from Zambia and has kept more of her snake-like features than some of the others.
ITEMS: Mamba muntu are always seen with a snake wrapped around themselves. She carries the traditional comb and mirror and is only adorned in jewelry, often including luxury watches.
HOME: Mamba muntu share their home with other watery spirits in a complex maze of underwater tunnels below rivers and lakes that are surrounded by tall rocky formations. They can use these tunnels to travel from one lake to another.
MAGIC: When a mamba muntu is angry, she may take the shape of a whirlwind to travel across the land.
TEMPERAMENT: Mamba muntu are vain and lusty, a reminder to mankind the dangers of materialism. Her temper swings both ways, bringing great fortune to those she favors, and wreaking terrible havoc upon those that rouse her wrath. Sometimes she leaves her belongings out to be stolen by men who can then use her magical items to bring about their own good fortune. However, the mamba muntu usually appears to these men, and instead of asking for her belongings back, demands these men become completely faithful only to her, not only denying their wives, but sometimes even asking for the wife, mother or father of the man as a sacrifice as well. These men are bound to secrecy, but she ensures their sexual, material and all other needs are met.
DISLIKES: As much as she values her physical image, she does not like being photographed. In fact, she doesn't even like art depicting her to be photographed.
REGIONAL KIN: The Chitapo is another water spirit that is less often converted into the image of a mermaid. Originally, they were shadowy apparitions that live in deep lakes with giant snakes called funkwe who help guard their emerald and diamond treasure. Chitapo are purely evil, baiting humans close to the water with floating objects, and then snatching the human's shadow and devouring it, causing the human to become paralyzed and fall into the water and drown. Babies that showed signs of being evil were given up to the chitapo as a sacrifice, and they gladly took them. Looking one in the face was also enough to kill a human instantly. Kaaimen are pale, shiny, silvery mermaids with flashing red eyes that like to keep to themselves mostly, but lure humans into their murky pools to feed on them. They are able to fly and don't like the noise of human villages or cities. She dwells in the area around Karoo, a now desert terrain that was once submerged in water, and is thought to be a stranded remnant of that long ago past.
