Actually, little proof from the HP canon exists that supports the argument. I respect JK's wishes for total acceptance and have no objections to homosexual persons whatsoever; yet no canonical evidence exists to support her noncanonical claim. Sure, Dumbledore had a wonderful friendship with Grindelwald at first, however, though some may disagree, their relationship can be likened more to that of David and Jonathan from the Holy Bible and not to romantic lovers.

Considering that JK Rowling is the author and created all the characters, her saying that he is homosexual DOES in fact make him so. It seems that Rowling didn't mention it in the books since it doesn't really add or take away from his character, and only revealed his sexuality due to fan's curiosity.

theMoonlitOctopus In reply to RandomDeviant347 [2012-05-22 22:22:24 +0000 UTC]

I refer you to my above comments. The picture states that Dumbledore is a homosexual by canonical fact. Rowling's press releases are not part of the canon. So, until such a time arises when Rowling adds clarification as to our beloved headmaster's sexuality in any of the books, Dumbledore remains happily discreet.

Um, I happened to come across your comment just now, and your argument doesn't make sense. J.K. Rowling doesn't need to state it in the books for it to be so. She stated it elsewhere (in the press release) and therefore, that makes it canon within her works. As RandomDeviant347 already stated, Rowling didn't need to put it in because it didn't add or take away from the books. She may have left subtle hints - I don't remember - but she did state the fact after, therefore making it canon.

The point is, Dumbledore being gay, or whatever term you would use, is canon. It is a fact, stated (and recorded, I assume) by the author as proof.

Exlisbir In reply to theMoonlitOctopus [2012-06-05 02:37:32 +0000 UTC]

Holy shit I know this may be "old" but I don't care. If Rowling says her character, hence the word H E R C H A R A C T E R, is gay then HER character is gay. She created Dumbledore no one else. She didn't down right say it in the book because it probably wasn't even important. Besides there were some obvious things in there about him that could've been proof enough. Jesus Christ why are you so determine to say otherwise? He's not your character so you have no right to say if he's gay or not. If Rowling says he's gay then he's gay end of story.

RandomDeviant347 In reply to theMoonlitOctopus [2012-05-23 03:02:11 +0000 UTC]

Ultimately, it probably isn't that important. Dumbledore's still a great character, is he not?

That "tripe" inspired several elements in Harry Potter and nearly every great work in Western civilization. Do not bring your personal feelings to play against history. Most teachers of the Bible themselves are atheists, but still recognize its integral role in shaping our society.

Just want to say what a disrespectful piece of tripe your comment is and how it displays your utter ignorance.

The Bible, along with all the rest of the world's religion's texts are wonderful moral and historical lectures. Even if one does not agree with or believe in the subject of the text, they can still respect those beliefs.

Saying the Bible is crap because it has inspired hatred in the world is like saying the radio is an evil invention because men like Adolf Hitler used it to great success.

Yet that same book also says these things:

Homosexual men should be killed
Women should stay in the kitchen all day and serve their husbands and should not talk.
An invisible man in the sky is watching everything we do and will punish those who don't follow the same beliefs that you OH SO HOLY Christians do....but he loves us.

NelsonHojax In reply to ZacharyMckim [2011-08-09 04:46:51 +0000 UTC]

Never said I was Christian, I'm an agnostic as a matter of fact. But I have enough respect for other people's beliefs and opinions that I don't go around hypocritically smearing others while claiming that everyone that doesn't feel exactly the way I do is a bigot.

Machiavelli's "The Prince" has passages that talk about unscrupulous methods of attaining and maintaining political power, but that doesn't mean that we should disown the whole piece because of a few testy passages.

BTW, most of what you claimed the bible had in it are actually interpretations, not surprising since it is a religious piece of literature. Besides, how would you even know what is in the bible, since you yourself claim that you've never read it!

You're just as bad as the bigoted jerks who say that homosexuals are evil and atheists are Satan's spawn. Why don't you practice a little open mindedness ya moron!

ZacharyMckim In reply to NelsonHojax [2011-08-13 22:39:20 +0000 UTC]

You expect me to be open minded to religion when it has brought nothing but suffering to the world. It is a scourge on mankind and should be treated as such. I KNOW what christians are like you pitiful mister agnostic "durr I can't make up my mind" ass. I have several die hard Christian family members, before you start preaching that the religious believers should be treated equally, I want you to know that when I was 16 my aunt punched me in the face for saying that I was an atheist.

theMoonlitOctopus In reply to ZacharyMckim [2012-05-22 22:16:25 +0000 UTC]

It is terrible to hear of how your aunt treated you for affirming your belief. Nevertheless, it does not follow that the Bible or Christianity told her to do so. Perhaps you've simply never met a true Christian, who lives out godliness with respect for humanity.

ZacharyMckim In reply to theMoonlitOctopus [2012-05-24 04:31:08 +0000 UTC]

A True Christian huh? Okay smart guy, I'll tell you what a true christian is.

A True Christian believes the following things:

Women's place in the world is to serve man and ONLY to serve her man.

Gay people are going to hell for the way they were born.

All people who do not accept that the savior zombie Jesus Christ rose from the dead after being nailed to a piece of wood are going to be thrown into a pit of fire and agony and burning flesh for all eternity....because you are loved unconditionally by this very same person who died for you, who now is going to throw you into a pit of eternal damnation.

Life has no meaning without god, so anyone who doesn't believe in god, their life has no meaning.

A boogeyman under the ground is constantly after you.

Everything said in the bible, is the absolute truth...which includes the stories of the earth flooding and a man gathering EVERY INSECT, EVERY MAMMAL, EVERY SEA CREATURE AND BIRD...into a large boat of limited size. And that your same god, is a child killing monster who is willing to go to the lengths of having a man JUUUST about sacrifice his own flesh and blood son....before he decides "Ya know...this is pretty fucked up....I better tell him I was just kiddin!"

So no, we're better off without such a book, and humanity would've advanced much farther than it is now...without you christians getting in the way.

NelsonHojax In reply to ZacharyMckim [2011-08-14 03:45:37 +0000 UTC]

I see, not only are you bigoted against people who are religious but also people who aren't. Just because I'm agnostic doesn't mean I can't make up my mind. It means I believe in some sort of other worldly force, but I don't think that any of the religions have it right.

Just because your family is full of assholes (not surprising, considering the way you act) doesn't mean everyone that holds Christian beliefs is an idiot.

If you want to talk about evils perpetrated by atheists then take a good hard look at Joseph Stalin and all the wonderful things he did. Not that I'm so stupid to claim that all atheists are evil just because of a few nutballs.

I guess by your logic, if a black man hit you once, you would claim that all black people are evil low-down dickwads.

What? Didn't Rowling just announce it? Are you that blind? If the author herself says that HER character is gay, then he IS, for god's sake.

Also, lol this comes a little late.

theMoonlitOctopus In reply to UK-05 [2012-05-22 22:09:54 +0000 UTC]

The picture seems to say that it's canonical fact that Dumbledore is a homosexual. Rowling's comments are not canonical. Ergo, unless you have evidence from the canon, your statement is irrelevant.

i-stamp In reply to theMoonlitOctopus [2013-10-27 03:09:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't think you know what 'canonical' means. According to the rules. And the rules are set by the author, not by the story. When an author makes a deceleration about their work, is is, by definition, canon.
