Description My mid-term project for my drawing class. Used almost every media I had on hand- watercolor, watercolor pencil, colored pencil, markers, crayons, magazine clippings, pictures printed off the computer (such as the sad, starving child in the bottom center and one of the trees) india ink, gesso, acrylic paint, graphite, and I think that may be all.

The assignment was to create an "emotionally evocative" piece, and we had to use transfers. As I couldn't get my transfers to work (the copies were too old, I found out later) I printed pictures of the computer and glued them on, then painted/gessoed/inked over them. My theme was really about hope- I was thinking about how a phoenix was supposed to rise from the ashes, and it struck me that they rise from the ashes- not the flames. I've dealt with fire before, my dad's business having burned down a few years ago, and I can tell you though the fire itself is shocking and fearsome, it's really in the aftermath that you see the real damage, and that really brings the sorrow. It's in the ashes that the real pain lies, and so that a phoenix can rise from the ashes seemed poignant to me, and was really the best way I could think of showing hope.

Wow... I think this is a really incredible piece. From all the murk and mire and "ashes" below, to the empty white sky. I really love how much depth the phoenix appears to have through the different shades of color. Awesome work! ^___^
